What does the future hold for students of engineering and other technical professions and for young practitioners More specifically, what does the future hold for you To what extent can you, and other aspiring professionals, create your future, both personally and professionally My answer You can determine your future to the extent that it does not have to be something that happens to you and you can do so, in part, by drawing on the professional knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) discussed in the preceding chapters of this book and supplemented in this chapter. 

There are only two futures for you, the one you proactively create for yourself or, in the vacuum of your inaction, weak action, or reaction, the one other s create for you. 

Perhaps that is a bit strong because your future will be influenced by external conditions you cannot control. But you can adopt strategies and implement tactics that will largely determine your professional and personal future. You can engineer your future. 

The same only two futures idea applies to your organization, whether it be the university or college at which you are student, your employer or professional society, or, some day, your own business. Of course, creating the future of an organization is much more challenging than creating your future. 

In keeping with this book s managing and leading theme, this last chapter will further help you engineer your future, and that of organizations of which you are a member, and do it in the following two steps
