Westfield

The Lurgi fixed-bed gasifier operates using lump coal of a noncaking type with an ash composition chosen to avoid a sticky, partly fused ash in the reactor. A slagging version of this gasifier has been tested in Westfield, Scotland. Other fixed-bed gasifiers have similar coal requirements.

This is an oxygen-blown flow slagging gasifier first developed back in the 1970s by British Gas at the Westfield Development Center in Fife, Scotland, to produce SNG from coal.

Among Reichmanis s many honors is the Society of Chemical Industry s 2001 Perkin Medal for her pioneering contributions to designing materials that allow silicon chips to continue shrinking in size while also improving in performance. She has authored more than 120 journal articles, edited five books, and organized and chaired numerous national and international symposia. She holds 17 U.S. patents. Reichmanis earned her B.S. (1972) and Ph.D. (1975) at Syracuse University. She resides in Westfield, NJ.

Sample Separation and Characterization. Three vitrinite samples (Silkstone, High Hazels, and Westfield) were obtained by hand-picking of macroscopic vitrain bands in Carboniferous coals. Selected vitrain particles were crushed to pass a B. S. 100 mesh sieve (250 y) and polished mounts were prepared. Sample purity was determined by point-counting (sample reflectivity) 500 points, giving a + 2% (by volume) accuracy (18).
