A new BGL gasifier was installed at the Schwarze Pumpe complex in Germany to replace two of the Lurgi gasifiers currently in operation. This unit (85 MWe) gasifies MSW and bituminous coal for the production of electricity and methanol and was recently commissioned. 

The world s largest concentration of Lurgi gasifiers is in South Africa, where Sasol operates three major complexes. The Lurgi gasifiers used by Sasol operate at "low" temperatures and consequently phenols, and "tars" are "distilled" from the coal at the top of the gasifier, and carried out with the raw gas. On condensation two liquid phases are formed, "tar" and "gas liquor" (water). The "tar acids" (phenol, cresols etc) are dissolved in the "gas liquor" which is fed to the Phenosolvan unit where the acids are recovered by counter current extraction with butyl acetate or diisopropyl ether. The crude tar acids are fractionated to yield phenol, ortho, meta and para cresol and xylenols. The phenol is further refined to produce a high purity, colourless and stable product. Phenol is used mainly in the production of formaldehyde resins while the cresols are used as flotation frothers and in the manufacture of pesticides etc.

In another case, when the acid gas is very rich in CO2 (i.e. 90 percent or higher) and contains olefins, the author knows no suitable process other than Stretford or Unisulf. An example is Rectisol offgas downstream of a Lurgi gasifier the Stretford process has been used, although with some problems. 

Full scale synthetic natural gas (SNG) plants based on standard Lurgi gasifiers (250 mm scf/D) can be built now to operate on noncaking or weakly caking coals. The developmental gasifiers which are candidates for demonstration will be ready for commercial deployment by 1988 for the conversion of all types of coals with potential reduction in capital and operating cost of 15 to 20 percent. Advanced processes with additional improvements will not be ready for commercialization until the 1990 s.
