Wells notation

Wells notation takes the form (n, p) -net where n and p are integers that describe, respectively, the shortest route in terms of number of nodes to complete a circuit back to the starting place and the connectivity of a given node. Thus a (6,3)-net contains hexagonal holes (or, if irregular, holes that form a six-sided polygon a 6 gon n = 6) and each node is 3 connected (p 3). [Pg.574]

The networks (d) 10,3a and (e) 10,3b (ThSi2) have the same Wells notation and Schlafli symbol (10 ) (the shortest route is shown with white nodes) but a different topology. Figure 4.29 Common three-dimensional network topologies (a) a-Po (or NaCI), uninodal, with 6-connecting octahedral nodes (b) diamond lattice with tetrahedral nodes (c) rutile, binodal with 3- and 6-connecting nodes. Although the Schlafli symbol gives somewhat more information, both types of notation result in there being more than one net with the same set of numbers. The added letter in Wells notation does of course take care of this, but new nets are hard to designate since there is no central committee handing out extra letters. [Pg.61]

There is a well defined nomenclature employed to describe the synnnetry of any particular surface [1], The standard notation for describing surface symmetry is in the fonn... [Pg.285]

In this equation as well as in the succeeding discussions, we have suppressed, for notational simplicity, the pemuitation or degeneracy factor of two, required for SFG. [Pg.1276]

The first line notations were conceived before the advent of computers. Soon it was realized that the compactness of such a notation was well suited to be handled by computers, because file storage space was expensive at that time. The heyday of line notations were between I960 and 1970, A chemist, trained in this line notation. could enter the code of large molecules faster than with a structure-editing program,... [Pg.23]

To obtain the G2 value of Eq we add five corrections to the starting energy, [MP4/6-31 lG(d,p)] and then add the zero point energy to obtain the ground-state energy from the energy at the bottom of the potential well. In Pople s notation these additive terms are... [Pg.314]

Fischer projections and d-l notation have proved to be so helpful m representing carbohydrate stereochemistry that the chemical and biochemical literature is replete with their use To read that literature you need to be acquainted with these devices as well as the more modern Cahn-Ingold-Prelog R S system... [Pg.1028]

Shorthand Notation for Electrochemical Cells Although Figure 11.5 provides a useful picture of an electrochemical cell, it does not provide a convenient representation. A more useful representation is a shorthand, or schematic, notation that uses symbols to indicate the different phases present in the electrochemical cell, as well as the composition of each phase. A vertical slash ( ) indicates a phase boundary where a potential develops, and a comma (,) separates species in the same phase, or two phases where no potential develops. Shorthand cell notations begin with the anode and continue to the cathode. The electrochemical cell in Figure 11.5, for example, is described in shorthand notation as... [Pg.467]

The random nature of most physieal properties, sueh as dimensions, strength and loads, is well known to statistieians. Engineers too are familiar with the typieal appearanee of sets of tensile strength data in whieh most of the individuals eongregate around mid-range and fewer further out to either side. Statistieians use the mean to identify the loeation of a set of data on the seale of measurement and the variance (or standard deviation) to measure the dispersion about the mean. In a variable x , the symbols used to represent the mean are /i and i for a population and sample respeetively. The symbol for varianee is V. The symbols for standard deviation are cr and. V respeetively, although a is often used for both. In this book we will always use the notation /i for mean and cr for the standard deviation. [Pg.277]

Dimensionless groups for a proeess model ean be easily obtained by inspeetion from Table 13-2. Eaeh of the three transport balanees is shown (in veetor/tensor notation) term-by-term under the deseription of the physieal meanings of the respeetive terms. The table shows how various well-known dimensionless groups are derived and gives the physieal interpretation of the various groups. Table 13-3 gives the symbols of the dimensions of the terms in Table 13-2. [Pg.1040]

The contractors SSAHPs at Sites I and K required that safety and health program inspections be conducted however, these requirements were not effectively implemented at either of these sites. Both Site K contractors required the HSO to conduct daily inspections, and both stated in their written plans that hazards would be immediately corrected. Neither contractor, however, had established hazard abatement procedures to ensure the prompt correction of hazards, and site records for both contractors indicated that hazard abatement activities were either not documented or not completed. For example, the subcontractor s daily safety log contained several notations of safety hazards, including an unstable concrete well and storage of diesel cans near the propane tank however, later log entries and site records did not track the abatement of these hazards. [Pg.205]

The stress-strain relations in this book are typically expressed in matrix form by use of contracted notation. Both the stresses and strains as well as the stress-strain relations must be transformed. First, the stresses transform for a rotation about the z-axis as in Figure A-1 according to... [Pg.477]

In general whether we are discussing symmetrical or antisymmetrical states, the numbers nx are usually termed the occupation numbers, and if we are given a complete spectrum of one-particle states, indicated by A, then the set of occupation numbers assigned to the values of A, specifies the state of the system of JY identical particles just as well as the assignment of a A-value to each particle. Thus we may use the notation just as well as A to specify the state, and so write... [Pg.447]

The nurse aids continuity of anticonvulsant administration by making a notation on the care plan, as well as by informing all health care team members of the importance of the drug. If the primary health care provider discontinues the anticonvulsant tiierapy, the dosage is gradually withdrawn or another drug is gradually substituted. [Pg.259]

As shown by the first prompt there are four types of search, of which we will discuss two exact and substructure (SSS). In an exact search, only information regarding exactly the stracture given will be retrieved, but even so there may well be several answers, because CA treats stereoisomers and isotopically substituted compounds as separate answers. At the conclusion of the search the system gives the number of answers, (e.g., 4). We may now look at the four answers by using the display command. As in the CA File, there is a choice of display formats, but if we choose SUB we will get (1) the Registry Number, (2) the approved CA index name, (3) other names that have appeared in CA for that compound, (4) a structural formula, and (5) the number of CA references since 1967, along with a notation as to... [Pg.1635]

We tend to teach chemistry by using certain well established standard items of dogma. .. theoretieal propositional knowledge often dominates school chemistry and symbolic notation becomes a reified account of many facts which have never been observed . [Pg.39]
