Investigations of the underlying mechanism(s) revealed that the concentration, conformation, and bioactivity of vitronectin (a protein contained in serum that is known to mediate osteoblast adhesion ((Thomas et al., 1997) see the section Vitronectin ) was responsible for the select, enhanced adhesion (a crucial prerequisite for subsequent, anchorage-dependent-cell function) of osteoblasts on these novel nanoceramic formulations. Specifically, of the proteins (such as albumin, laminin, fibronectin, collagen, and vitronectin) tested, vitronectin adsorbed in the highest concentration on nanophase alumina after 4 hr moreover, competitive adsorption of vitronectin was 10% greater on nanophase compared to conventional alumina (Webster et al.,... [Pg.151]

Haytliurii s next experiment ctjnsi ted in subjecting rabbits and guinea pigs to the fumes of heated TNT fur several hours a day for over a month. In this way the animals were under the same conditions as men in the plants who are forced to breathe fumes from washing or crystallizing appara.tus, or from any source where the TNT is subjected to heat. The animals used in this test showed no Webster reaction. [Pg.114]

A third DOT-approved device (Alco-Screen 02, Chemat-ics, Inc., North Webster, Ind.) consists of a plastic test strip suitable for insertion under the subject s tongue or into collected sahva. After saturation of the reaction pad with saliva and a 2-minute incubation period, an ADH-diaphorase coupled indicator color bar becomes visible if the ethanol concentration is 0.02 g/dL or greater. [Pg.1304]

The sensory-irritation potential ofJP-4, JP-8, and JP-8+100 were evaluated in groups of four male Swiss-Webster mice exposed, head-only, for 30 min to atmospheres of each material containing both vapor and aerosol phases (U.S. Department of the Air Force 2001). The three test materials evoked breathing patterns characteristic of upper airway sensory irritation at all exposure concentrations. Examination of the breathing patterns revealed no apparent pulmonary (deep lung) irritation at any concentration. The calculated values for concentrations of JP-4, JP-8, and JP-8+100 that caused a 50% decrease in respiratory rate (RD50) were 4,842,2,876, and 1,629 mg/m3 (total aerosol + vapor concentration), respectively. The relative irritancy ranking of the three fuels was JP-8+100 > JP-8 > JP-4. In contrast, respiratory rates of mice exposed to deodorized kerosene vapor by inhalation at 6,900 mg/m3 were not decreased by 50% or more from control values (Carpenter et al. 1976). [Pg.51]

Benz(a)anthracene-3,4-diol-1,2-epoxide (BADE) is a potent carcinogen [74-76] that metabolizes stereochemically and results in enantioselec-tive toxicities. The tumorigenic activities of benz(a)anthracene (BA), the (-1-)- and (—)-enantiomers of fra s-3,4-dihydroxy-3,4-dihydrobenz(a)anth-racene (BA-3,4-dihydrodiol) and the racemic diastereomers of the BA-3,4-diol-1,2-epoxides - that is, either or both of the diastereomeric 1,2-epoxides derived from BA-3,4-dihydrodiol, in which the epoxide oxygen is cis-(diol epoxide-1) or trans- (diol epoxide-2) to the benzylic 4-hydroxyl group-were examined in newborn Swiss-Webster mice by Wislocki etal. [77]. The mice were administered a total dose of 280 nmoles of compound, in divided doses consisting of 40 nmoles within 24 h of birth, 80 nmoles at 8 days of age, and 160 nmoles at 15 days of age. The experiment was terminated when the animals were 26 weeks of age. BA-3,4-diol-l,2-epoxide-2 was the most potent compound tested. All of... [Pg.132]
