The actual pressure exerted by the atmosphere varies with altitude and weather. The pressure of the atmosphere at the cruising height of a commercial jetliner (10 km) is only about 200 Torr (about 0.3 atm), and so airplane cabins must be pressurized. A very low pressure atmospheric region, such as an area of low pressure on the weather chart in Fig. 4.6, typically has a pressure of about 0.98 atm at sea level. A typical region of high pressure is about 1.03 atm. [Pg.266]

FIGURE 4-21 A surface weather chart for 1200 GMT (700 EST), March 5, 1964, showing information available at each observation station. The chart also shows high- and low-pressure areas, fronts, and isobars constructed by interpolation between stations. (900 or 1000 millibars need to be added as appropriate to values see text. Adapted from FAA, 1965). [Pg.324]

Meteorological measurements and visual inspection of weather charts show that all seiche episodes in Rotterdam Harbor (arbitrarily defined as a seiche-event in which the crest height exceeded 0.25 m at ROZ, a criterion that was applied in several previous studies of seiches at this location) coincided with low-pressure... [Pg.181]

The evidence presented above indicates that conditions for the existence of convection cells, together with the information regarding the passage and direction of cold fronts, can be used to identify and predict seiche-prone situations. In an operational setting, the predicted weather chart for the next 24 h is available with relatively high reliability, and the predicted air temperature can be obtained from numerical weather prediction models. The moisture content of the air could also be taken into account. Moreover, a more thorough analysis of the stability of the lower atmosphere is possible, since information of the complete vertical and for the complete southern North Sea area is available (possibly avoiding false alarms due to criteria that are only met locally). This makes the use of specific reference levels unnecessary. Therefore, all relevant parameters are available for the prediction of seiche-prone situations with a 24-h prediction window, sufficient for the port... [Pg.189]

In order to guarantee valid data, weather charts, air temperature and air relative humidity graphics were downloaded irova Instituto Portugues do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) (https //www.ipma.pt/pt/) to authenticate outdoor collected data. [Pg.188]

Critical GLC s can usually be calculated based on a unstable atmosphere, thus enabling the designer to determine a worst case scenario. For any given day, typical atmospheric stabihty data can usually be obtained from a local weather bureau, or may be estimated from the so-called Pasquill chart for the appropriate Atmospheric Stability Class (refer to Table 1). [Pg.347]

Of the collection sites are shown in Figure 1. The corresponding meteorological data for each storm are obtained from the several ESSA Weather Bureau stations also shown in Figure 1. For each storm, vertical cross sections of the atmosphere are constructed from the available radiosonde data, and the synoptic conditions are taken from the surface, 500 mbars, 300 mbars, and other facsimile charts. [Pg.460]

Frequently, pure liquid samples produce charts that are essentially a perfect match for each peak, both by retention and quantity. This allows a quick and certain identification. However, as individual samples of accelerants are "weathered" by exposure to fire and air the more volatile, low-boiling fractions are consumed or lost through evaporation. The compositions of some accelerant mixtures such as gasoline are rapidly altered. With passage of time., "weathered" accelerant mixtures become more difficult to compare with charts of standard mixtures. [Pg.111]

Generalized data on the hydrometeorological regime of the Black Sea were placed in navigation charts and in special publications. In 1908 the Atlas of winds and mists of the Black Sea was published, and in 1915 the next issue of the navigation chart of the Black Sea. Publication of monthly weather reviews was initiated, and some climatic data on the Turkish coasts of the Black Sea were published. In 1908-1914 hydrographic surveys of the coasts were conducted and the maps of the Black Sea verified. [Pg.21]

The following chart prepared by the U. S. National Weather Service gives the temperature perceived by an average person as a function of the real air temperature and the wind speed. The current scale was adopted in 2001. [Pg.2291]

Just as the day has its cycles, so does the year, with seasons that are more or less conducive to the different energetic types. Vata is aggravated in the fall and winter, when the weather becomes dry, windy, and cold. If you re an Air type, you need to stay warm and keep your skin moist with baths, showers, saunas, and steam rooms, and use moisturizing oils and lotions. This is a particularly important time to follow the dietary suggestions in the chart below, sticking with favored foods and avoiding foods that are not recommended. When the weather is cold and windy, you need to pay particular attention to maintaining your exercise routines and daily schedule. [Pg.144]
