LC conditions and peak identification are shown in the inset. The retention times of basic analytes (pyridoxine and thiamine) are strongly dependent of the concentration of ion-pairing reagent (1-hexanesulfonate) in the mobile phase. Water-soluble vitamins in formulations have been determined by use of ion-pair chromatography. The vitamins include several B vitamins as well as niacin, folic acid, and ascorbic acid (565). Vitamins D and Da were rapidly separated on reverse phase columns (247) as are vitamins A, D, and E in multivitamin tablets (564). Addition of silver ions to the mobile phase has been shown to increase the flexibility inherent in RPC by complexing with the unsaturated bonds and thereby decreasing the retention factor. This effect is also observed with other unsaturated drug molecules including steroids (247). Vitamin A and related compounds have... [Pg.151]

The water-soluble vitamins niacinamide (a neutral compound), riboflavin (a neutral compound), niacin (an anion), and thiamine (a cation) were separated by micellar electrokinetic chromatography in 15 mM borate buffer (pH 8.0) with 50 mM sodium dodecyl sulfate. The migration times were niacinamide (8.1 min), riboflavin (13.0 min), niacin (14.3 min), and thiamine (21.9 min). What would the order have been in the absence of sodium dodecyl sulfate Which compound is most soluble in the micelles ... [Pg.627]

At present, much effort is being devoted to simultaneous separation and detection of water-soluble vitamins. Undoubtedly, multiple water-vitamin analysis using LC as a separation method is effective with RP ion pair chromatography with acidified methanol or acetonitrile water as the mobile phase. Detection is performed using combined systems such as UV absorbance and fluorescence systems, depending on the vitamins to be determined. Analysis in real food... [Pg.2714]

The solubility of the uncombined vitamins varies considerably. In the sample they may occur also linked as coenzymes, esterified in various ways or as derivatives which develop the same biological activity. Knowledge of this is vital for correct processing, isolation and determination. The water-soluble vitamins are in general more stable than those in the fat-soluble groups this facilitates chromatography. Nevertheless the precautions recommended under I should be observed. [Pg.292]
