After 48 h of withdrawal in fresh water, muscle residue concentration had declined to less than 0.05 yg/g- Plasma and bile, which contained 0.185 and 0.210 yg/ml, respectively, at 0 h had no... [Pg.127]

D. Adipose tissue contains more calories and less water than muscle protein. Triacylglycerol stored in adipose tissue contains 9 kcal/g, and adipose tissue has about 15% water. Muscle protein contains 4 kcal/g and has about 80% water. [Pg.16]

A 60-year-old man developed acute confusion, grimacing, stereotypy, refusal of food and water, muscle rigidity, mutism, and extreme negativism after abruptly discontinuing all psychotropic medications. He was given loraz-epam and then clonazepam was re-started. His catatonic symptoms and autonomic instability resolved completely. [Pg.74]

Globulins. Proteins insoluble in water, soluble in dilute salt solutions. They include such proteins as myosin from muscle, fibrinogen from blood and edcstin from hemp. [Pg.331]

Atomic absorption using either flame or electrothermal atomization is widely used for the analysis of trace metals in a variety of sample matrices. Using the atomic absorption analysis for zinc as an example, procedures have been developed for its determination in samples as diverse as water and wastewater, air, blood, urine, muscle... [Pg.415]

Nontraditional Hormones. Novel hormones identified ia cardiovascular tissue have profound effects on maintenance of blood pressure and blood volume ia mammals. Atrial natriuretic hormone (ANH) is a polypeptide hormone secreted from the atria of the heart. When the cardiac atrium is stretched by increased blood volume, secretion of ANH is stimulated ANH ia turn increases salt and water excretion and reduces blood pressure (6). Endothelin is a polypeptide hormone secreted by endothehal cells throughout the vasculature. Although endothelin is released into the circulation, it acts locally in a paracrine fashion to constrict adjacent vascular smooth muscle and increase blood pressure (7). [Pg.172]

Rya.nia., The root and stem of the plant yania speciosa family Flacourtiaceae, native to South America, contain from 0.16—0.2% of iasecticidal components, the most important of which is the alkaloid ryanodine [15662-33-9] C25H250 N (8) (mp 219—220°C). This compound is effective as both a contact and a stomach poison. Ryanodine is soluble ia water, methyl alcohol, and most organic solvents but not ia petroleum oils. It is more stable to the action of air and light than pyrethmm or rotenone and has considerable residual action. Ryania has an oral LD q to the rat of 750 mg/kg. The material has shown considerable promise ia the control of the European com borer and codling moth and is used as a wettable powder of ground stems or as a methanohc extract. Ryanodine uncouples the ATP—ADP actomyosia cycle of striated muscle. [Pg.271]

ANPs play an important role in the maintenance of cardiovascular homeostasis by counterbalancing the renin—angiotensin (RAS) system. ANP, the main circulating form of the natriuretic peptides, effectively relaxes vascular smooth muscle, promotes the excretion of sodium and water, and in the CNS inhibits vasopressin release and antagonizes AT-II induced thirst. [Pg.528]

Potassium is required for enzyme activity in a few special cases, the most widely studied example of which is the enzyme pymvate kinase. In plants it is required for protein and starch synthesis. Potassium is also involved in water and nutrient transport within and into the plant, and has a role in photosynthesis. Although sodium and potassium are similar in their inorganic chemical behavior, these ions are different in their physiological activities. In fact, their functions are often mutually antagonistic. For example, increases both the respiration rate in muscle tissue and the rate of protein synthesis, whereas inhibits both processes (42). [Pg.536]

Barium metal and most barium compounds are highly poisonous. A notable exception is barium sulfate which is nontoxic because of its extreme iasolubihty ia water. Barium ion acts as a muscle stimulant and can cause death through ventricular fibrillation of the heart. Therefore, care must be taken to avoid contact with open areas of the skin. Workers must wear respirators (of type approved for toxic airborne particles), goggles, gloves, and protective clothing at all times. The toxic barium aluminate residue obtained from barium production is detoxified by reaction with a solution of ferrous sulfate and converted iato nontoxic barium sulfate. According to OSHA standards, the TWA value for Ba and Ba compounds ia air is 0.5 mg/m. ... [Pg.473]
