The unequal basicities of the three nitranilines can be illustrated by the following experiment. It is a general property of the salts of weak bases—as well as of weak acids—that in aqueous solution they are stable only if an excess of acid (or alkali) is present. In the present case this phenomenon shows itself in the appearance of the yellow colour characteristic of the bases and finally, since the nitranilines are sparingly soluble in water, in their precipitation in crystalline form. The stabilizing of aqueous latexes succeeded by using emulsifiers (anionic, nonionic) and/or their mixture, steric stabilizators (polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), hydroxyethyl cellulose, polyethylene glycol, new protective colloids etc.), and polymerizable surfaces active agents, in general. Poiymers which are 100% acrylic are known for their outstanding exterior durability properties, as well as excellent alkali resistance and overall high performance. Styrene is generally lower-cost than many other monomers, so styrene-acrylics are lower in cost than all acrylics but have poorer exterior durability because styrene is a UV absorber and degrades. Styrene-acrylics, do, however, generally have very good water-resistance properties due to their hydrophobicity. Styrene acrylics are popular in some areas of Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Water absorption of WPC was little affected by ionic strength. Fleming et al. (18] examined the effect of 5% NaCI on the water absorption of soy and sunflower flours, concentrates, and isolates. The water absorption of the soy and sunflower flours was higher in 5% NaCI than in water. Generally, salt decreased water absorption of the isolates the concentrates of both plant products were little affected by NaCI. Data reported by Fleming et al. reflect a response to NaCI however, the type of ion is known to affect the type of response of other properties (33] and possibly the same is true for water absorption. [Pg.192]
