In 1931 Carl accepted a position as professor of biochemistry at Washington University Medical School in St. Louis and Gerty was appointed as a research associate. She eventually achieved the rank of professor of biochemistry in 1947. The focus of their research was carbohydrate (sugar) metabolism and the influence of various hormones on these metabolic pathways. [Pg.295]

Oxytocin was the first small peptide to be synthesized. Its synthesis was achieved in 1953 by Vincent du Vigneaud (1901-1978), who later synthesized vasopressin. Du Vigneaud was bom in Chicago and was a professor at George Washington University Medical School and later at Cornell University Medical College. For synthesizing these nonapeptides, he received the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1955. [Pg.976]

Nevertheless, more and more organizations are developing disclosure policies and preparing professionals to inform patients and their families about errors that have caused harm and about what will be done to prevent future errors. For example, Victoria Frazier, a physician and advocate of the patient safety movement in the Barnes Jewish Hospital System and at Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis, is studying accountability with respect to medical accident and is a leader in research identifying evidence-based approaches to disclosure (Frazier, 2003). [Pg.199]

Michael K. Georgieff, M.D., is a professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Child Development and codirector of the Center for Neurobehavioral Development at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. His expertise and research interests are in fetal and neonatal nutrition and neurodevelopment, with special emphasis on the effect of fetal/ neonatal iron nutrition on brain development and neurocognitive function and the effect of illness on neonatal protein-energy metabolism. Dr. Georgieff received his M.D. from the Washington University Medical School. He is a member of the Perinatal Research Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Society for Pediatric Research, and the American Pediatric Society. [Pg.205]
