Warm home

Sir, there are many iniquities in this life. In my work, I meet the dying and bereaved every day. I have seen young children fail, and women and their new bom infants die in childbed. I would do everything in my power to restore them, but in the history of mankind only Jesus Christ had that gift. There is much we could do to improve life— decent food, medicine, clean air, warm homes. Let s concentrate on what sustains life, not on some fruitless attempt to bring life back. ... 

As Aurelia did, each day (or as often as you can) write down 10 things you are grateful for. They might include friendships, kind words, a warm home, meeting a friendly person, and so much more. By focusing your attention on the positive aspects of your life, you ll be helping to restore hormonal balance to your body, which in turn helps restore alkaline balance. 

This process is diagramed in Fig. 6.9. Notice that the reactants are taken apart and converted to elements [not necessary for 02(g)] that are then used to form products. You can see that this is a very exothermic reaction because very little energy is required to convert the reactants to the respective elements but a great deal of energy is released when these elements form the products. This is why this reaction is so useful for producing heat to warm homes and offices. 

Hydrocarbon combustion reactions are highly exothermic they emit large amounts of heat. This heat can be used to warm homes and buildings, to generate electricity, or to expand the gas in a cylinder and drive a car forward. Approximately 90% of energy in the United States is generated by hydrocarbon combustion. 

You may have seen Charles s Law in action when a latex rubber or Mylar foil balloon was subjected to a temperature change. A rubber balloon left in a hot car will expand significantly. Either balloon will shrink when brought from a warm home or store to the cold outdoors on a winter day. 

Please notice that in a well-ventilated laboratory and a pressure cell, these experiments can be executed safely. In seven years of graduate research activity at the Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Akron, only one catalyst ignition and one real CO alarm occurred. Several false CO alarms were sounded until someone noticed that they always happened about 2 30 PM. As it turned out, one maintenance employee parked his old car right in front of the air intake to the lab ventilation. He warmed up his car for a while before he started to go home after his shift, and the motor exhaust gas set off the false alarms. 

Some have also predicted a series of thirdhand impacts that might occur if the climate warms and becomes more dynamic. Wildlife populations would be affected (positively and negatively), as would some vegetative growth patterns. The home range of various animal and insect populations might shift, exposing people to diseases that were previously uncommon to their area, and so on. 

Some new features of furnaces available today include variable speed blowers, which deliver warm air more slowly and more quietly when less heat is needed, and variable heat output from the burner, which when combined with the variable speed blower allows for more continuous heating than the typical fixed firing rate. Distribution system features can be sophisticated with zoned heating which employs a number of thermostats, a sophisticated central controller, and a series of valves or dampers that direct airflow or water to different parts of the home only when needed in those areas. 

Patients sensitive to specific allergens should be educated on ways to avoid them. Environmental controls to reduce the allergen load in the patient s home may reduce asthma symptoms, school absences because of asthma, and unscheduled clinic and emergency visits for asthma.13 Patients allergic to warm-blooded pets should remove them from the home if possible or at least keep them out of the bedroom. However, allergens may remain in the home for months after the pet is removed.1... 

The first ground-source heat pump was installed in Indianapolis, Indiana in the home of Robert C. Webber, an employee of the Indianapolis Power and Light Company. It was a 2.2 kW compressor hooked to a direct expansion ground coil system in trenches supplying heat to a warm air heating system. The installation was monitored beginning October 1, 1945 and this is the first day of ground source heat pump operation documented in literature [2],... 

Patients suffering from influenza should get adequate sleep and maintain a low level of activity. They should stay home from work and/or school in order to rest and prevent the spread of infection. Appropriate fluid intake should be maintained. Cough/throat lozenges, warm tea, or soup may help with symptom control (cough, sore throat). 

In a safe environment her presence is radiating. She can walk, run and talk a blue streak. At her home in a remote location near Snowflake, Arizona, I experienced her as articulate, intelligent, feisty, playful and warm. 

Then mother gets that dreadful cold. The laundry where she works is always so very hot. She come out at night into the cold air her coat is thin for she cannot buy a warm one and she get a dreadful chill one night as she comes home. She cough all the time after that. It shake her nearly all to pieces but she still go to her work till one day she fall beside her machine. They bring her home and we put her into bed and she never leave it again. 

Aaron and Olive Ihde continue to live in Madison in their charming house in the University Arboretum. Those who have visited their home have fond memories of the beautiful setting and warm hospitality that they encountered there. In recent years a number of graduate students have had the good fortune to participate in History of Chemistry evening seminars held in the Ihde home, sessions in which Olive Ihde joined Aaron and his students as an active participant. Those of us involved with the preparation of this book join with all of their other friends and associates in wishing them both many more happy and productive years. 

In December, 1961, when I went home to New York for the holidays, I decided to call him. He invited me to visit him at the medical school. It was Saturday morning and Professor Wolff was making rounds with the medical students. He greeted me warmly but explained that his time was limited because he had to catch a train in the early afternoon.
