Blue Streak

In a safe environment her presence is radiating. She can walk, run and talk a blue streak. At her home in a remote location near Snowflake, Arizona, I experienced her as articulate, intelligent, feisty, playful and warm.

In mid-1959 the Minister of Defence, Sandys, on the advice of his permanent secretary, Powell, established an independent British Nuclear Deterrent Smdy Group, with representatives of the three services, the Foreign Office and the Treasury, under Powell s chairmanship. The group compared Blue Streak with two American ballistic missiles, the submarine-launched Polaris and the air-launched Skybolt. Rising estimates for the costs of research and development and of underground silos hardened the Treasury s opposition to Blue Streak, and the Chiefs of Staff were in favour of a mobile system. Once President Eisenhower had indicated to Macmillan in March 1960 that Skybolt would be available on satisfactory terms, the Defence Committee took the decision to cancel Blue Streak as a weapons system. The vulnerable Thors were taken out of service by the end of 1963.

Starch Iodide Paste TS Heat 100 mL of water in a 250-mL beaker to boiling, add a solution of 750 mg of potassium iodide (KI) in 5 mL of water, then add 2 g of zinc chloride (ZnCl2) dissolved in 10 mL of water, and while the solution is boiling, add with stirring a smooth suspension of 5 g of potato starch in 30 mL of cold water. Continue to boil for 2 min, then cool. Store in well-closed containers in a cool place. This mixture must show a definite blue streak when a glass rod dipped in a mixture of 1 mL of 0.1 M sodium nitrite, 500 mL of water, and 10 mL of hydrochloric acid is streaked on a smear of the paste.

The Blue Streak dual-screen pulverizer (Prater Industries, Inc.) is used for the grinding of resins, chemical salts, plastic scrap, food products, and similar materials to a granular uniform powder of No. 30 or No. 40 sieve fineness. Feed enters opposite ends of the rotor and undergoes three stages of size reduction by hammers of decreasing size. Two perforated) screens cover more than 70 percent of the area of the fini sizing drum through which the product passes. 

Aldermaston had worked hard producing the Granite devices, which were now abandoned in favour of the American designs. Assimilating the American data took some time. The Mark 28 in the form of Red Snow would be used not only in the free fall bomb for the V bombers but also as the warhead for the Blue Steel stand-off missile and the Blue Streak ballistic missile, although Blue Streak was cancelled before it was deployed. 

The Blue Streak missile was cancelled in 1960 in favour of the Skybolt missile which would be carried on the Vulcan bomber. This required the lightweight Mark 47 warhead, which apparently had a yield of 0.4 MT and a weight of 600-700 lbs. Unfortunately, Aldermaston had modified the design, using a British explosive which was less sensitive than the American explosive. As a result, its yield had been... 

The American Mark 28 of 1MT yield was anglicised as Red Snow, and mounted in the Yellow Sun case to produce Yellow Sun Mark II. It was also fitted to the Blue Steel stand-off missile and would have been the warhead for the Blue Streak IRBM had it been deployed operationally.
