Walnut leaves

Zgorka and Kawka [356] applied RP-HPLC both with UV detection and fluorometric detection in assessing the phenolic concentration in Eleutherocossus senticosus root preparation whose properties are considered similar to Ginseng. Amaral et al. [357] fnlly characterized the phenolic profile of walnut leaves extract, which is used as a folk medicine. Jnglone (5-hydroxy-l,4-naphtoqninone), which is characteristic of the fresh leaves, was fonnd in very low concentration, due to polymerization phenomena. Therefore, this componnd is nnsuitable for qnality control of this drng. [Pg.601]

A preparation containing plant extract is described that reduces inflammation, disinfects, and relaxes muscle tension. It contains a mixture of dried blood-wort, mint, walnut leaves, Jerusalem artichoke leaves, rose petals, and plantain in specified amounts. The active plant compounds are extracted with ethyl alcohol. They are concentrated and formulated into medicinal or cosmetic preparations. [Pg.425]

It is well known that vegetables such as tomatoes or lettuce do not thrive near walnut trees. Juglone and a few related compounds are responsible for this effect. At a concentration of 0.002%, juglone completely prevents germination of lettuce seeds. It is thought that rain wash from walnut leaves and exudation from roots transport juglone to the soil (Soderquist 1979 Terzi et al. 2003 Terzi 2008). [Pg.146]

The essential oil of the leaves of Juglans regia has been examined by Schimmel Co. Two samples were distilled, one at Miltitz, and the other at Barrdme. The distillates were of an olive-brown colour and possessed the characteristic odour of walnut leaves. At about 10 they formed semi-solid, butter-like masses, which melted at about 20 . From the solutions in 90 per cent, alcohol large quantities of paraffin separated out, which after repeated recrystallisation from alcohol had a melting-point 61 to 62 . The constants of the oil are shown in the table below —... [Pg.118]

Trees vary in their response to simazine (Lange et al, 1969a). Walnut was the most tolerant of all deciduous fruit or nut tree species in this study, which used rates that exceeded the label use rates. Several scientists have reported increased nut quality (Larson and Ries, 1960 Neilsen and Hogue, 1992), tree growth, and leaf nitrogen from applications of simazine (Tweedy and Ries, 1966 Neilsen and Hogue, 1992). The extent of use and crops treated with simazine in California and in crops in the United States are covered in Tables 17.2 and 17.3. [Pg.217]

Re-bloom of the trees which blossom before leaf burst (hazel, maple, etc.) occurs rather rarely, but cherry-, apple- and other fruit trees experience re-bloom quite often [19]. Early yielding walnuts also have re-bloom [29]. [Pg.412]
