Nancy Jackson My presentation must have come off more negatively that I meant. I actually agree with you. I believe that the United States has good deal of exceptional research. What I am trying to say is that we have an opportunity, if we partner and do multidisciplinary research, to be truly extraordinary. When I talk to some of the people in Europe about a potential virtual laboratory or a collaboration within the United States, they know that we would be formidable competitors if we were to organize in the same way that they are. [Pg.110]

Multicenter production of reference values is gaining acceptance, both as a theoretical concept and as a practical approach. A Spanish study introduced a cooperative model, simulating a virtual laboratory for 15 biochemical quantities. A recent project in the Nordic countries (NORIP ) was aimed at the production of common reference intervals for 25 analytes. [Pg.443]

Examination methods proposed by The Interesting Chemistry often take up the form of strategic and adventure games, or even a virtual laboratory. Each game has a particular didactic goal to achieve, and achieving this goal is only possible... [Pg.140]

In addition to this philosophical directive, there have been many technological advances regarding medication and its effect on the brain. In the last few years scientists have learned more about the brain and the role of medications in treatment than ever before. A versatile three-pound maze of nerve and tissue, the brain is a virtual laboratory whose workings and chemical interactions determine the state of our mental health, down to the most complicated mood (Kotulak, 1997). [Pg.6]

Whereas the first decades of quantum chemistry induced many chemists to rethink the status of theory within chemistry, the establishment of mathematical laboratories and the wide use of computers compelled many to rethink the status of experiment. In fact, computers came to be seen as virtual laboratory sites in which new types of experiments, both virtual and actual, could be enacted to give answers to chemical questions. Virtual experiments and mathematical laboratories expanded the sites of quantum chemistry. [Pg.242]

In nanotechnology numerical simulation can help to predict properties of new materials that do not yet exist in reality. And it can help to identify the most promising or suitable materials. The trend is towards virtual laboratories in which materials are designed and studied on a computer. Simulation offers the possibility of determining mean or average properties for the material macroscopic characterization. At... [Pg.250]

Vedani and Dobler reviewed the role of neural net-based QSAR and 3D-and 4D-QSAR methods to establish a virtual laboratory for the assessment of receptor-mediated toxicity and the prediction of oral bioavailability (55). [Pg.337]

The ultimate vision of computational chemistry is to provide a virtual laboratory for chemical explorations. The goal is not to replace but rather complement the real lab. In the virtual lab, it is easy to change experimental conditions and to experiment with hypothetical what-if scenarios. Virtual synthesis of chemical compoimds can be done with a few mouse-clicks, whereas the virtual measurement of physical and chemical properties is the often burdensome task of a computational engine based on the laws of classical and/or quantum physics. Most research efforts, therefore, are aimed at improving the algorithms and approximations implemented in the computational engines. The main role of quantum chemical response theory, which is the subject of this chapter, is the virtual measmement of optical properties of molecules. [Pg.136]
