Philosophical directives

Even though there appears to be no correlation between occupational safety and process safety performance (Elliott et al., 2008), process safety improvement efforts need to follow the same philosophical directions as the above example— collect the proper information and devise improvement plans. Capturing the commitment of employees and modifying culture can be difficult until employees actually see and understand the benefit from the efforts. 

Trying to balance the issues that clients face is difficult, particularly with regard to medication. It is especially problematic when considering so many philosophical directives and technological advances. Among the numerous pressures to provide accountable, efficient, and effective service is the encouragement of medications that are used as a form of intervention for clients suffering from many physical and mental health difficulties. 

As with all counselors, social workers must be aware of the philosophical directives or environmental pressures that motivate a client to seek care. According to Walter (2000) advances in technology have changed our environment and have forced society to reexamine current roles and positions. The idea of simply taking a pill offers a quick fix to those who see it as an easy way to solve a problem. Many clients seek medications from their physician, therapist, or social worker as either a sole or adjunct remedy for treatment in mental health. 

In addition to this philosophical directive, there have been many technological advances regarding medication and its effect on the brain. In the last few years scientists have learned more about the brain and the role of medications in treatment than ever before. A versatile three-pound maze of nerve and tissue, the brain is a virtual laboratory whose workings and chemical interactions determine the state of our mental health, down to the most complicated mood (Kotulak, 1997). 

Therefore, knowledge of the philosophical directive, technological advances, and rapidly expanding information about the brain is essential. This is not to say that all social workers must have an in-depth knowledge of all the types of medications used in the professional helping relationship. An awareness of the types of medications available (particularly the mental health medications) as well as where and when to seek additional information in order to assist the client is considered an ethical and competent practice necessity (Dziegielewski, 1998).

Note that the production of C is not stoichiometrically determined but that the relative amounts of B and C can be changed by varying the reaction conditions. This book claims to reveal the secrets of the physical work of the philosophers stone, however, though it stays close to its theme it uses metaphorical and philosophical allusions to the process, rather than approaching it directly in physical terms. The question of the origin of life on Earth leads directly to the question of the formation of our planet, of the solar system and of the universe. The ancient philosophers, as we have seen, attempted to answer such questions, but the models which we discuss and argue about today were proposed by scientists only in the last century.
