Virgins, collection

Used oil disposal trends include waste minimisation such as by reclaiming used fluid on site, as well as recycling of mineral oil lubricants instead of disposing by incineration. The recycling effort involves a system where spent mineral oils are collected then shipped to specialty refineries where the materials are distilled, hydrofinished, and re-refined into fresh base stocks. These re-refined materials are virtually identical to virgin feedstocks. [Pg.267]

Recycling of HDPE. Polyolefins, including HDPE, are the second most widely recycled thermoplastic materials after PET (110). A significant fraction of articles made from HDPE (mostly bottles, containers, and film) are collected from consumers, sorted, cleaned, and reprocessed (110—113). Processing of post-consumer HDPE includes the same operations as those used for virgin resins blow mol ding, injection molding, and extmsion. [Pg.388]

Cathode surface-average Raman spectra were produced with the Raman microscope. Raman spectra were collected from multiple 52x75pm sections of the cathode surfaces at 0.7pm resolution and averaged into one representative spectrum for each cathode. MicroRaman surface-average spectra of the cathode from the virgin cell, and cathodes removed from cells,... [Pg.455]

Shaw selected a combination of polyolefin resins as the base polymer of choice for its substitute, EcoWorx . Due to the low toxicity of its feedstocks, superior adhesion properties, dimensional stability, and its ability to be recycled, EcoWorx meets all of the design criteria necessary to satisfy the needs of the marketplace from a performance, health, and environmental standpoint. Research also indicated that the post-consumer carpet tile had a positive economic value at the end of its useful life. The cost of collection, transportation, elutriation, and return to manufacturing processes is less than the cost of using virgin raw materials. This is a truly recyclable (or Cradle to Cradle) product and is a good example of how substitution through innovation can make economic as well as environmental sense. ... [Pg.24]

The present paper reports on the development of a culture collection of potentially toxic dinoflagellates from the Virgin Islands, large-scale culture and screening for toxicity in nine species, and a more detailed consideration of the toxic properties of G. toxicus and P. concavum. [Pg.226]

A widespread method for determining the induction period for autoxidation of oils and fats consists of passing a continuous stream of air through the heated sample and collecting the volatile acids evolved in a water trap, where they are determined on a real time basis. The time plot usually presents a flat appearance for a certain period and then takes off in an accelerated manner. This test is the basis of several national and international standards (e.g. AOCS Cd 12b-92—oil stability index" ISO 6886—accelerated oxidation test for oxidative stability of fats and oils ) and the design of the Rancimat equipment, where the end determination is based on conductivity measurements . In addition to oxidation stability as determined by the Rancimat method and POV, which negatively affects virgin olive oil stability, other nonstandard properties were proposed for better assessment of the quality of this oil, namely LC determination of Vitamin E (21), colorimetric determination of total polar phenols and UVD of total chlorophyll. ... [Pg.664]

At Desoto, in Greensboro, N.C., wash solvent from each solvent-based paint batch is separately collected and stored. When the same type of paint is going to be produced, waste solvent from the previous batch is used in place of virgin solvent, reducing the volume of the wastestreams which can contain metals as well as other paint wastes and solvent. In 1981, Desoto produced 25,000 gallons of waste mineral spirits. In 1982, when the system was implemented, waste solvent production amounted to 400 gallons. This same technique is currently being applied to their latex paint production operation (Kohl 1984). [Pg.91]
