Documented effects An infusion of the flowers in water is used as an expectorant. Decoctions of the leaves and flowers of this species, as well as the related species Verbascum thapsus, V. phlomoides, and V. thapsiforme are used as an expectorant and to coat and sooth the mouth and throat to reduce effects of catarrh and coughs (Seredin and Sokolov 1969). Phenylethanoid glycosides isolated from a methanolic extract of the plant inhibited mammalian DNA polymerases (lida et al. 2003). [Pg.257]
