Newhouse and co-workers (1995] have reexamined the effects of intravenous nicotine in AD, but with particular attention on tasks that are affected by mecamylamine. Preliminary results suggest that nicotine produces improvements in attentionally driven tasks, with improved reaction time, hits, and false alarms on a continuous performance task. Throughput (speed-accuracy product] was improved as well. Small improvements were seen also in verbal memory tasks, but no improvement was seen in the RAT, which was impaired by mecamylamine.

Depressed mood and emotional lability occur in up to 75 % of gonadorelin recipients, and there are rare reports of more severe mood disturbances (18). Defects of verbal memory have been described and may be reversed by add-back estrogen treatment (18) and sertraline (19).

A rare polymorphism (H452Y) in the C-terminal tail of the 5-HT2A-R has also been found that may alter agonist-induced receptor activity (87). Carriers of this rare 452Y allele were found to have decreased verbal memory performance in a delayed free-recall test (88), and it will thus be of interest to examine what effect this polymorphism has on other cognitive and emotional processes.
