Tasks cognitive

Observations are appropriate for recording physical task sequences, or verbal interactions among several people. They are not suitable for collecting precision performance data, or studying cognitive tasks which involve covert mental processing. 

Operational sequence diagrams cannot represent highly cognitive tasks because it is difficult to assign cognitive components to discrete symbols. 

The IMAS technique described above is useful, in that it addresses aspects of operational skills, that is, diagnostic and problem solving abilities, that are not covered by other techniques. To that extent it can be regarded as a method of cognitive task analysis. It is not essential to use a computer program to obtain useful results. The mental models produced by IMAS can be elicited by pencil and paper methods. Nevertheless interpretation and application of the results require some expertise. 

In general, HTA, IMAS, and CADET fulfill most of the above criteria, hence they can be used together as a framework for carrying out both action and cognitive task analysis. When particular aspects of the human-machine interaction must be examined in greater detail for example, the temporal characteristics of the task or the team communications, certain methods can be selected to provide this information—OSDs in this case. Clients are assigned different cognitive tasks that exercise the specific areas of the brain that seem to have sustained injury. Tasks can run the gamut, but frequendy involve engaging in spatial-ability, abstraction, verbal, memory, and... 

Adult subject studies can be divided into two broad categories response to basic sensory stimulation and response to more complex cognitive tasks. Some functional neuroimaging studies have examined the effects of scopolamine in cognitive tasks. Although scopolamine inhibits increases in cerebral blood flow to somatosensory stimulation, it does not inhibit the neural response (Ogawa et al. 1994). Collectively, these results indicate that scopolamine has profound effects on cerebral activity, both in resting and cognitive task-activation conditions. Of particular note are effects on frontal and striatal activity, which could well account for impairments on cognitive abilities such as working memory.

Bend, Twist and Touch (Fig. 36) was a physical task that showed changes similar to those observed for cognitive tasks. Masking Speed (Fig. 37) likewise reflected similar effects. As with many tests, some improvement as a result of practice was evident at the time of recovery. Rifle accuracy (Fig. 38) was greatly diminished in the medium and high dose groups but only briefly at the lowest (MEDjo) dose.
