Venturi example

The proper installation of both orifice plates and Venturi-type flow tubes requires a length of straight pipe upstream and downstream of the sensor, ie, a meter mn. The pressure taps and connections for the differential pressure transmitter should be located so as to prevent the accumulation of vapor when measuring a Hquid and the accumulation of Hquid when measuring a vapor. For example, for a Hquid flow measurement in a horizontal pipe, the taps are located in the horizontal plane so that the differential pressure transmitter is either close-coupled or connected through downward sloping connections to allow any trapped vapor to escape. For a vapor measurement in a horizontal pipe, the taps should be located on the top of the pipe and have upward sloping connections to allow trapped Hquid to drain. [Pg.65]

Example 3 Venturi Flowmeter An incompressible fluid flows through the venturi flowmeter in Fig. 6-7. An equation is needed to relate the flow rate Q to the pressure drop measured by the manometer. This problem can he solved using the mechanical energy balance. In a well-made venturi, viscous losses are neghgihle, the pressure drop is entirely the result of acceleration into the throat, and the flow rate predicted neglecting losses is quite accurate. The inlet area is A and the throat area is a. [Pg.635]

Current designs for venturi scrubbers generally use the vertical downflow of gas through the venturi contactor and incorporate three features (I) a wet-approach or flooded-waU entry sec tion, to avoid dust buildup at a wet-dry pmction (2) an adjustable throat for the venturi (or orifice), to provide for adjustment of the pressure drop and (3) a flooded elbow located below the venturi and ahead of the entrainment separator, to reduce wear by abrasive particles. The venturi throat is sometimes fitted with a refractoiy fining to resist abrasion by dust particles. The entrainment separator is commonly, but not invariably, of the cyclone type. An example of the standard form of venturi scrubber is shown in Fig. 17-48. The wet-approach entiy section has made practical the recirculation of slurries. Various forms of adjustable throats, which may be under manual or automatic control. [Pg.1594]

The most difficult part of a field test is the flow meter, if it wasn t planned in the construction phase. There is no way to simulate a meter run if you don t have the proper pipe length. Figure 10-8 is an example of the requirements. An ASME long radius flow nozzle is preferred by the author, though a short throat venturi will do. The probability is that an orifice is all that will be available. It should be examined before and after the test to verify not only the bore diameter, but the finish. The bore should... [Pg.431]

HAZOP focuses on study nodes, process sections, and operating steps. The number of nodes depending on the team leader and study objectives. Conservative studies consider e er line and vessel. An experienced HAZOP leader may combine nodes. For example, the cooling looser . .ater chlorination system may be divided into a) chlorine supply to venturi, b) recirculation loop, and e) to .er water basin. Alternatively, two study nodes may be used a) recirculation loop and tower water basin, and b) chlorine supply to venturi. Or one study node for the entire process. [Pg.89]

This sonic velocity occurs in a pipe system in a restricted area (for example, valve, orifice, venturi) or at the outlet end of pipe (open-ended), as long as the upstream pressure is high enough. The physical properties in the above equations are at the point of maximum velocity. [Pg.113]

An important example of the first type is the oil smoke pot which is powered by a slow burning, gassy pyrotechnic mixt such as amm nitrate and amm chloride with a small amount of carbonaceous fuel. The resulting gas jet pulls a stream of oil from a reservoir and injects it into a venturi where the formation of the aerosol takes place... [Pg.984]

Rate Meter Measures the instantaneous volume flow rate through the sampling systems. An example would be a rotameter or venturi meter. Used to set precise flow rate for flow sensitive sampling devices. [Pg.935]

Another critical part of the incinerator design is the pollution control system.11 Pollution control systems directly influence the levels and kinds of pollutants that are released and that can potentially reach the public. Most modern hazardous waste incinerators are designed with extensive air pollution removal systems. For example, a common pollution control system might include a system that cools or quenches gases produced by burning waste, followed by a system that reduces acid gas emissions, and ultimately followed by a particulate removal system such as fabric filters (bag-houses), electrostatic precipitators, venturi scrubbers, and others.10... [Pg.957]

In this chapter we will illustrate and analyze some of the more common methods for measuring flow rate in conduits, including the pitot tube, venturi, nozzle, and orifice meters. This is by no means intended to be a comprehensive or exhaustive treatment, however, as there are a great many other devices in use for measuring flow rate, such as turbine, vane, Coriolis, ultrasonic, and magnetic flow meters, just to name a few. The examples considered here demonstrate the application of the fundamental conservation principles to the analysis of several of the most common devices. We also consider control valves in this chapter, because they are frequently employed in conjunction with the measurement of flow rate to provide a means of controlling flow. [Pg.293]

Included in the class of fluid-entrainment pumps are not only pumps that use a fast-streaming vapor as the pump fluid, but also liquid jet pumps. The simplest and cheapest vacuum pumps are water jet pumps. As in a vapor pump (see Fig. 2.46 or 2.51), the liquid stream is first released from a nozzle and then, because of turbulence, mixes with the pumped gas in the mixing chamber. Finally, the movement of the water - gas mixture is slowed down in a Venturi tube. The ultimate total pressure in a container that is pumped by a water jet pump is determined by the vapor pressure of the water and, for example, at a water temperature of 15 °C amounts te about 17 mbar. [Pg.45]

Differential Pressure Meters Differential pressure meters or head meters measure the change in pressure across a special flow element. The differential pressure increases with increasing flow rate. The pitot tubes described previously work on this principle. Other examples include orifices [see also Eqs. (6-111) and (8-102), and Fig. 10-14], nozzles (Fig. 10-19), targets, venturis (see also Sec. 8 and Fig. 10-17), and elbow meters. Averaging pitot tubes produce a pressure differential that is based on multiple measuring points across the flow path. [Pg.14]

Let s try an example. Cyclopropane has a density of 0.001816 g/cm3. What pressure difference is generated by a flow rate of 50 cm3/s through a Venturi tube having radii of 0.50 and 0.030 cm ... [Pg.122]

Example 10.8 Air enters a converging/diverging nozzle (venturi) at a pressure of 120 psia and a temperature of 90°F. Neglecting the entrance velocity, and assuming a frictionless process, find the Mach number at the cross section where the pressure is 35 psia. [Pg.470]
