Cup anemometers have shaped cups mounted on the spokes of a wheel. The cups, under the action of the fluid forces, spin in a horizontal plane about a vertical shaft mounted in bearings. Vane or propeller types use a multibladed rotor, the axis of which is parallel to the flow direction as the rotating member. Both designs are commonly used for wind speed measurement or similar appHcations such as the velocity in ventilation ducts. Because of inertia, anemometers are most accurate under steady conditions. Velocity fluctuations cause readings that are too high. [Pg.63]

Because there are no rubbing components in this type of pump, it is easy to make them of corrosion-proof materials, and because there are no tight clearances it is also easy to run them at 120 °C. This allows operation above the boiling point of water and most laboratory solvents. Operation at this temperature together with a ventilation facility (comparable to gas ballast in rotary vane pumps) allows the Cole pump to handle vapours at input pressures of 1 atm compared with about 20 Torr for gas ballasted rotary vane pumps. [Pg.33]

The biochemical paths and actions by which aspirin and other salicylates achieve their therapeutic effects were poorly understood until at least a partial mechanism w as proposed by Sir John Vane in 1971. Vane, who later received a Nobel Prize for his efforts (1982), found that NSAIDs, including aspirin, block the production of prostaglandins by cells and tissues. During the same time frame. Vane and other researchers also confirmed the inhibitory effects of aspirin on platelet aggregation, this caused by interference with the ability of platelets to synthesize prostaglandins, notably thromboxane A2.
