Our understanding of seasonal and interannual variation in global terrestrial vegetation dynamics is, however, very sketchy at present. Ecosystem respiration measurements have been made for various soil-vegetation types for variable lengths of time Relationships between ecosystem respiration and weather data have been derived from these data for four major biomes 88), However, additional systematic collection of field respiration measurements would be necessary for placing much confidence in such a relationship. [Pg.404]

Isotopic variation in European human remains is caused by a combination of environmental, biological and cultural factors. For carbon, the main influence is the dominance of C3 photosynthesis in all vegetation types. The factors that can cause deviations from this general trend are the climatic effect,... [Pg.57]

The area is 7,808 hectares and the altitude ranges from 250 to 762 m. The soil is categorized as an Orthic Acrisol according to the FAO/UNESCO scheme (FAO/UNESCO 1979). The vegetation includes dry evergreen forest (DEF), dry deciduous forest (DDF) and plantation plots as the major vegetative types (Fig. 1). The climate is classified as Aw (Koppen 1931). The annual precipitation is 1,260 mm and the average temperature is 26°C. [Pg.319]

The vegetative types were distributed in a mosaic pattern in the northeastern part of the site. Bare ground (BG) without vegetation due to human activities, also scattered in the mosaic. [Pg.320]

The quality of CL calculations depends greatly on the available Data Base. These DB should allow the researcher to calculate CL values using the inner ecosystem parameters such as soil type, its chemical and physical characteristics, vegetation type, climate indices, etc. As a basis, the following algorithm is applied (Bashkin, 2002). [Pg.54]

Clear, colorless to pale yellow liquid with a pleasant, aromatic, grassy or vegetable-type odor. At 40 °C, the lowest concentration at which an odor was detected was 200 pg/L. At 25 °C, the lowest concentration at which a taste was detected was 200 pg/L (Young et al, 1996). A detection odor threshold concentration of 4.2 mg/m (699 ppbv) was reported by Punter (1983). [Pg.389]

Interestingly, the persistence of viruses such as polio has been shown to be dependent on the vegetable type. When introduced onto lettuce or cabbage, a 1 log reduction in polio virus was observed over 8 days. In contrast, viruses introduced onto green onions remained stable for over 14 days (Kurdziel et al., 2001). The underlying factors associated with the persistence of enteric viruses on fresh produce remain to be elucidated. [Pg.167]

Temperature parameters besides MAT, such as WMT and CMT, have been used to plot the distribution of modern vegetation types on various climagraphs, and these have also proven useful for determining the seasonality for fossil floras. Although MAT is the value that is most widely used for paleoaltimetry, WMT and CMT are often the ones that determine particular vegetation boundaries (Fig. 5 Wolfe 1979), and an understanding of the lapse rates for these seasonal temperatures is therefore also an important consideration in paleoelevation studies. For example, Meyer (1992) calculated WMT and CMT local lapse rates as well as... [Pg.162]

Aluminum levels in soil also vary with different vegetation types. For example, aluminum levels in the soils of coniferous forests are often higher than in soils of beech forests since coniferous forests tend to have more acid soils (Brusewitz 1984). Alternate views of the data are that the acidic soil produced by conifers can preferentially mobilize aluminum from deeper layers toward surface soil, or that conifers over beech preferentially grow in soils rich in aluminum and it is their metabolic processes which produce more acidic soil. An analysis of aluminum in soils by depth could improve the understanding of this process. [Pg.223]
