Fiber Analysis. Paper may be composed of one or several types of fibers, eg, animal, vegetable, mineral, and synthetic (see Eibers). Paper is generally composed of woody vegetable fibers obtained from coniferous (softwood) and deciduous (hardwood) trees. QuaUtative and quantitative methods have been developed to determine the fibrous constituents in a sheet of paper (see TAPPI T401). However, the proliferation in the number and types of pulping processes used have made the analysis of paper a much more complex problem. Comprehensive reviews of the methods are given in References 20 and 23. [Pg.11]

Sodium a-sulfomethylmyristate is the major component of a clear, antiseptic, liquid cleanser especially for use on the skin. A disinfectant such as fluoro-phene, bithionol, p-chloro-m-xylenol, or hexachlorophene is added, and also a high-quality animal, vegetable, mineral, or synthetic oil and an alkyl ether of polyethylene glycol [87]. [Pg.489]

Synthetic colorants are classified by the FDA as certified color additives and are defined as synthetically produced organic molecules that have their purities checked by the FDA. " A second category, colorants exempt from certification, includes naturally derived (animal, vegetal, mineral) compounds or their synthetic duplicates. Table 7.3.2 presents a summary of synthetic colorants and their utilization as food additives. [Pg.613]

For all the dmg wholesalers and fledgling manufacturing concerns, the bulk of pharmacy care took place in either the physician s office or, in more cosmopolitan settings, the apothecary shop. Even by the beginning of the twentieth century, the majority of physicians stiU dispensed their own medicines. 28 They prescribed and compounded a wide variety of vegetable, mineral, and animal substances, but a review of the 1860 United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) indicates that 587 (or 67 percent) of the total number of 871 medicinal substances listed therein were botanical.29 Some of the more popular were cinchona, sometimes referred to as Pemvian bark, and its refined counterpart, sulfate of quinine, both used as antiperiodics O opium from Papaver somniferum, the powerful narcotic and anodyne (i.e., pain reliever) of choice for many physicians of the day, as well... [Pg.33]

Waxes are a group of organic compounds consisting mainly of heat-sensitive hydrocarbons which are insoluble in water but soluble in most organic solvents and, most of them, free from glyceride. Sources of waxes can be animal, vegetable, mineral, synthetic and petroleum. The waxes used for fibre finishing are... [Pg.100]
