Various fonns

The various fonns of betaines are very important for their charge control functions in diverse applications and include alkylbetaines, amidoalkylbetaines and heterocyclic betaines such as imidazolium betaines. Some surfactants can only be represented as resonance fonns having fonnal charge separation, although the actual atoms bearing the fonnal charge are not ftmctionally ionizable. Such species are mesoionic and an example of a trizaolium thiolate is illustrated in table C2.3.3. [Pg.2578]

Recent studies on Ti02 focus on its various fonns (Yu et al., 1998). Ti02 particles can be loaded with metals and metal oxides such as vanadium oxide (Blanco et al., 1996 Sanati et al, 1991), platinum (Ait-Ichou et al, 1985 Falconer and Magrini-Bair, 1998 Vorontsov et al., 2000), manganese oxide (Gallai do-Amores et al., 1999),... [Pg.50]

Utilizing FT-EPR teclmiques, van Willigen and co-workers have studied the photoinduced electron transfer from zinc tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (ZnTPPS) to duroquinone (DQ) to fonn ZnTPPS and DQ in different micellar solutions [34, 63]. Spin-correlated radical pairs [ZnTPPS. . . DQ ] are fomied initially, and the SCRP lifetime depends upon the solution enviromnent. The ZnTPPS is not observed due to its short T2 relaxation time, but the spectra of DQ allow for the detemiination of the location and stability of reactant and product species in the various micellar solutions. While DQ is always located within the micelle, tire... [Pg.1614]

We are all familiar with tire tliree states of matter gases, liquids and solids. In tire 19tli century the liquid crystal state was discovered [1 and 2] tliis can be considered as tire fourtli state of matter [3].The essential features and properties of liquid crystal phases and tlieir relation to molecular stmcture are discussed here. Liquid crystals are encountered in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) in digital watches and otlier electronic equipment. Such applications are also considered later in tliis section. Surfactants and lipids fonn various types of liquid crystal phase but this is discussed in section C2.3. This section focuses on low-molecular-weight liquid crystals, polymer liquid crystals being discussed in tire previous section. [Pg.2542]

The Kraft point (T ) is the temperature at which the erne of a surfactant equals the solubility. This is an important point in a temperature-solubility phase diagram. Below the surfactant cannot fonn micelles. Above the solubility increases with increasing temperature due to micelle fonnation. has been shown to follow linear empirical relationships for ionic and nonionic surfactants. One found [25] to apply for various ionic surfactants is ... [Pg.2584]

A particularly interesting type of micellar catalysis is the autocatalytic self-replication of micelles [58]. Various examples have been described, but a particularly interesting case is the biphasic self-reproduction of aqueous caprylate micelles [59]. In this system ethyl caprylate undergoes hydroxyl catalysed hydrolysis to produce the free carboxylate anion, caprylate. Caprylate micelles then fonn. As these micelles fonn, they solubilize ethylcaprylate and catalyse further production of caprylate anion and caprylate micelles. [Pg.2594]

In homopolymers all tire constituents (monomers) are identical, and hence tire interactions between tire monomers and between tire monomers and tire solvent have the same functional fonn. To describe tire shapes of a homopolymer (in the limit of large molecular weight) it is sufficient to model tire chain as a sequence of connected beads. Such a model can be used to describe tire shapes tliat a chain can adopt in various solvent conditions. A measure of shape is tire dimension of tire chain as a function of the degree of polymerization, N. If N is large tlien tire precise chemical details do not affect tire way tire size scales witli N [10]. In such a description a homopolymer is characterized in tenns of a single parameter tliat essentially characterizes tire effective interaction between tire beads, which is obtained by integrating over tire solvent coordinates. [Pg.2644]

Besides stmctural variety, chemical diversity has also increased. Pure silicon fonns of zeolite ZSM-5 and ZSM-11, designated silicalite-l [19] and silicahte-2 [20], have been synthesised. A number of other pure silicon analogues of zeolites, called porosils, are known [21]. Various chemical elements other than silicon or aluminium have been incoriDorated into zeolite lattice stmctures [22, 23]. Most important among those from an applications point of view are the incoriDoration of titanium, cobalt, and iron for oxidation catalysts, boron for acid strength variation, and gallium for dehydrogenation/aromatization reactions. In some cases it remains questionable, however, whether incoriDoration into the zeolite lattice stmcture has really occurred. [Pg.2782]

Equations (l)-(3) in combination are a potential energy function that is representative of those commonly used in biomolecular simulations. As discussed above, the fonn of this equation is adequate to treat the physical interactions that occur in biological systems. The accuracy of that treatment, however, is dictated by the parameters used in the potential energy function, and it is the combination of the potential energy function and the parameters that comprises a force field. In the remainder of this chapter we describe various aspects of force fields including their derivation (i.e., optimization of the parameters), those widely available, and their applicability. [Pg.13]

Moleeules that are normally unreactive can be readily polymerized in such a process. Examples include organie gases such as ethane and various organosilanes. Monomers such as hexamethyldisiloxane can be readily polymerized to fonn tightly adherent films having a silica-like structure ... [Pg.445]

The decomposition of diacyl peroxides (36) is catalyzed by various transition metal salts,46,167 for example, Cu+ (Scheme 3.28).168,169 A side reaction is oxidation of alkyl radicals by the oxidized fonn of the metal salt e.g. Cu2+). [Pg.85]

Oxine (5) fonns complexes of analytical applicability with various metal ions. A RP-HPLC-FLD method (Xex = 370 nm, Xg = 516 nm) was proposed for simultaneous determination of Al(III) and Mg(II), using a Cjg column. Various details of the method are noteworthy Optimization of the method showed that for both ions it is best to have also precolumn and in-column complex formation, caused by the presence of 5 in the injection loop and in the carrier solution FLD detection is preferable to simple UVD because it avoids the background of 5 and interference of various ions forming nonfluorescent chromogenic complexes, e.g. Ca(II) and Zn(II) the intensity of the fluorescence can be increased by micelle formation on addition of SDS and neutralized Af,Af-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-aminoethanesulfonic acid (6). The LOD (SNR = 3) were 0.74 (xM (18 ppb) Mg(n) and 0.60 (xM (16 ppb) Al(III) the latter was attributed in part to residual impurities in the purified water -... [Pg.274]

If a tetraalkylammonium salt is used as supporting electrolyte, this process is either reversible or quasi-reversible and occurs at around -0.8 V vs aqueous SCE in various aprotic solvents and with various electrode materials (Hg, Pt, GC). If a Bmisted acid is added to the solution, the first step is converted to a two-electron process 0 produced in the first step is protonated to form 02H, which is more reducible than 02. Thus, 02H is further reduced to 02H at the potential of the first step. According to detailed polarographic studies in H20-DMS0 mixtures, about 30% v/v water is needed to convert the one-electron process to the two-electron process [41]. A metal ion, M+, interacts with 02 to fonn an ion-pair M+-02 (often insoluble) and shifts the half-wave potential of the first wave in a positive direction [42]. Electrogenerated superoxide 02 can act either as a nucleophile or as an electron donor and has been used in organic syntheses [43],... [Pg.243]
