Variety diversification

The risk in any year of a serious disease infection can be reduced on farms growing cereals if a range of varieties are grown that have different disease resistance ratings and resistance to different races of the disease. NIAB produces variety diversification tables for yellow mst in wheat and mildew in bariey. [Pg.127]

Another point for structural diversification is the sulfonamide group. Imai had already shown that a wide variety of groups could be introduced at this position to optimize the reaction. Since a wide variety of sulfonyl chlorides are commercially available, a number of different types of groups could be examined (Scheme 3.34). Testing of a variety of aryl and alkyl groups on the 1,2-cyclohexanediamine backbone demonstrates that the simple methanesulfonamide 122 is clearly superior or equal to many other analogs in the cyclopropanation of cinnamyl alcohol (Table 3.11). Another concern which was directly addressed by this survey was the question of catalyst solubility. [Pg.136]

The most common and diverse approach to cleanup (and extraction of water samples) in pesticide residue analysis is SPE. Over the last 20 years, improvements and diversifications in SPE formats, sorbent types, and apparatus have made SPE a widely used approach for a variety of applications, including the analysis of pesticide residues. SPE cartridges or disks can be likened to low-resolution HPLC columns in that similar stationary and mobile phases are used. A typical particle size in SPE is 40 pm, and the plastic cartridges are generally packed with 0.1-1 g of sorbent in plastic tubes. The choice of reversed-phase, normal-phase, and ion-exchange media in SPE is very diverse, and Table 2 lists some of the more popular SPE applications for the cleanup of pesticides. [Pg.760]

Varieties are very different in their susceptibility to disease, and this is of great importance to the organic farmer. It makes sense to consider a varietal diversification scheme and to select at least three varieties for every farm, so that each has a different resistance factor. These different varieties can be sown in adjacent fields. [Pg.80]

Using hydrogen to produce electrical energy from fossil fuels in large centralised plants will contribute positively to achieving important reductions of C02 emissions, if this is combined with C02 capture and sequestration processes. Such plants will also help to increase the diversification of resources, since a variety of fossil feedstocks can be used, including resources such as coal and waste that otherwise cause major impacts on the environment, as well as biomass. [Pg.504]

A major diversification of the enzymes of the early cnidarians during Cambrian times was advocated for case (6) above. Judging from fossil molecules, isoprenoids in a wide variety of structures were invented at those early times (Chapter 16.1). Later, this capability was transferred to the plants, where further diversification occurred. Symbionts may have taken part to these affairs, although disentangling their contribution would be arduous since the integrated biont may have formed a new whole, the holobiont (Pietra 1995). [Pg.71]

A key feature of the clonal selection theory is that each antibody-forming cell or clone is committed to the expression of one antibody. The diversity in the response is a consequence of the great variety of distinct clones. Initially, Burnet (1957) assumed that antibody diversification occurs exclusively early in life, by a random... [Pg.41]

The focus of the chapter has been antibody diversification in humans and mice, the species that have been most thoroughly studied for the longest time. However, in the last several years it has become clear that, although the principal features of antibody diversification are shared by all vertebrates, the specifics can vary considerably from one species to another, even within the class of mammals. Evolution may achieve workable solutions in a variety of ways, none necessarily optimal." Among the tasks of the next few years will be exploration of the limits of this variation. [Pg.64]

As the FDA indirectly encourages a diversification of drug options, resulting in both the brand extensions described above and in the variety of individualized medicine choices to be experimented with, consumers and their health-care providers will need to broaden both their information sources and the extent of that knowledge. [Pg.365]

A wide variety of problems and issues are considered in this volume. One that arises repeatedly is the diversification and increased specialization we are now undergoing. This puts increased demands for incorporation of new subject matter into an already overburdened curriculum. Furthermore, some express concern that this diversification is leading to fragmentation and loss of collegiality. Others are less concerned, recognizing that these pressures are simply the irritants that are the source of evolution. [Pg.617]

Instead of the U-4CR, a 3CR takes the place of its secondary reaction when 2-amino-pyridine or pyrazine, oxocompounds and isocyanides form their products, so that its carbonic acid components do not enter this product [124, 125]. In all probability, the intermediate protonated Schiff base reacts with its isocyanides so that, ultimately, the bicyclic 3-aminoimidazole [1,2a] pyridine is cyclized. Some further diversifications can proceed, if secondary amines can be acylized. No other simple way of producing a comparable collection of such a great variety of complex heterocycles can be accomplished [126]. [Pg.156]
