Then, the weld depths penetration are controlled in a pulse-echo configuration because the weld bead (of width 2 mm) disturbs the detection when the pump and the probe beams are shifted of 2.2 mm. The results are presented in figure 8 (identical experimental parameters as in figure 7). The slow propagation velocities for gold-nickel alloy involve that the thermal component does not overlap the ultrasonic components, in particular for the echo due to the interaction with a lack of weld penetration. The acoustic response (V shape) is still well observed both for the slot of height 1.7 mm and for a weld depth penetration of 0.8 mm (lack of weld penetration of 1.7 mm), even with the weld bead. This is hopeful with regard to the difficulties encountered by conventional ultrasound in the case of the weld depths penetration. [Pg.698]

The Washburn model is consistent with recent studies by Rye and co-workers of liquid flow in V-shaped grooves [49] however, the experiments are unable to distinguish between this and more sophisticated models. Equation XIII-8 is also used in studies of wicking. Wicking is the measurement of the rate of capillary rise in a porous medium to determine the average pore radius [50], surface area [51] or contact angle [52]. [Pg.470]

If the spatial arrangement of atoms is required this can be deduced from the basic structure by neglecting the positions occupied by lone pairs of electrons. Water, for example, can be described as a V shape whilst ammonia is a trigonal pyramid. [Pg.39]

The apparatus to use is seen in figure 13 which consists of a burette, thermometer, Erlenmeyer flask and a two-holed rubber stopper that has a small V-shaped wedge cut out of one side of the rubber stopper to allow the inside contents to vent. 31.5g of orangy-red fuming nitric acid (see chemicals section) is poured into the Erlenmeyer flask and the rubber stopper with its burette and thermometer is placed on to the... [Pg.133]

A sample solution is drawn or pumped into a V-shaped groove cut into the end of a capillary tube. The crossed gas and liquid streams form an aerosol. An impactor bead can be used to provide an even smaller droplet size. [Pg.145]

The total trajectory of the ions is approximately V-shaped, the top of one leg of the V being the position of the pusher electrode and the top of the other being the position of the ion collector (a microchannel plate detector). [Pg.403]

The film tube is collapsed within a V-shaped frame of rollers and is nipped at the end of the frame to trap the air within the bubble. The nip roUs also draw the film away from the die. The draw rate is controlled to balance the physical properties with the transverse properties achieved by the blow draw ratio. The tube may be wound as such or may be sHt and wound as a single-film layer onto one or more roUs. The tube may also be direcdy processed into bags. The blown film method is used principally to produce polyethylene film. It has occasionally been used for polypropylene, poly(ethylene terephthalate), vinyls, nylon, and other polymers. [Pg.380]

A variation to the top-feed dmm filter is the dual dmm filter which uses two dmms of the same size in contact with each other and rotating in opposite directions. The feed enters into the V-shaped space formed on top of the two dmms and the cake that starts forming initially contains coarser particles due to the settling which takes place in the feed zone. This is beneficial to the clarity of the filtrate because the coarser particles act as a precoat. Erom the point of view, however, of the final moisture content of the cake the stratification of the soHds in the cake may lead to somewhat wetter cakes. Utilization of the area of the dmms is poor since there are dead spaces under the two dmms. The primary appHcation of the dual dmm filters is in dewatering coarse mineral or coal suspensions at feed concentrations greater than 200 kg/m. ... [Pg.397]

The molten filaments are extmded through the spinnerette down a vertical chimney where they are air-quenched. The filaments are then converged to form the threadline in the V shape formed by crossed ceramic pins or other similar devices. The threadline passes to the floor below where finish is appHed and is wound up on the spin bobbins. [Pg.251]

In the gum rosin process, pine trees are wounded to stimulate the flow of gum. V-shaped slashes are cut through the bark, and the exudate is collected in a bucket below the slash. Production is stimulated by painting sulfuric acid on the slashes. The oleoresin (exudate) is separated by distillation into gum spidts of turpentine and gum rosin. The gum turpentine industry has decreased in importance in the 1990s because it is labor-intensive. The process is carried out in Russia, the People s Repubflc of China, Indonesia, Portugal, Brazil, and Mexico. [Pg.138]

Microstructural examinations revealed V-shaped openings along the tube seam, some extending into as much as 50% of the tube wall thickness. The incompletely closed seam provided a crevice in which differential concentration cells developed (see Chap. 2, Crevice Corrosion ). The resulting localized corrosion caused the observed pits. [Pg.319]

The tetrameric structure of the lac repressor has a quite unusual V-shape (Figure 8.22). Each arm of the V-shaped molecule is a tight dimer, which is very similar in structure to the PurR dimer and which has the two N-termi-nal DNA binding domains close together at the tip of the arm. The two dimers of the lac repressor are held together at the other end by the four carboxy-terminal a helices, which form a four-helix bundle. [Pg.144]

Figure 8.22 The lac repressor molecule is a V-shaped tetramer in which each arm is a dimer containing a DNA-hinding site. The helix-tum-helix motifs (red) of each dimer bind in two successive major grooves and the hinge helices (purple) bind adjacent to each other in the minor groove between the two major groove binding sites. The four subunits of the tetramer are held together by the four C-terminal helices (yellow) which form a four helix bundle. The bound DNA fragments are bent. (Adapted from M. The large, heavy-duty, integral engine-compressor has long been the workhorse of the gas compression industry. The in-line or V-shaped power cylinder, horizontal compressor cylinder configuration is lamitiar. [Pg.292]

Disk Filters Disk filters consist of a number of concentric disks mounted on a horizontal rotary shaft. The operating principle is the same as that of rotary-drum vacuum filters. The basic design is illustrated in Figure 22. The disks are formed by using V-shaped hollow sectors assembled radially about a central shaft. Each sector is covered with filter cloth and has an outlet nipple coimected to a manifold... [Pg.358]

The phase-diagram (temperature vs concentration) for a eutectic two-component alloy shows at low temperatures a central two-phase region and two solid one-phase regions at low and high relative concentrations. At the eutectic temperature the liquid phase at an intermediate concentration can all of a sudden coexist with the two solid phases. Upon further increase of temperature, the liquidus lines open up a V-shaped liquid... [Pg.900]

Parts of the tank were projected to distances up to 360 m (1200 ft). Twenty-two pieces of the tank were recovered, constituting approximately 80% of the original tank. Debris was found clustered in two separate areas, namely, within the radii of 5° to 20° and 65° to 95° from the car s direction of movement. Three empty tank cars located up to a distance of three railroad tracks from the exploded car were blown from the rails. The undercarriage of the car was bent into a V-shape (see Figure 2.1). One person was killed in the explosion. Analysis of a recovered piece of the tank car showed that failure was due to brittle fracture. [Pg.27]

The first (white) product has been characterized by X-ray diffraction at —55° and features a linear F-Xe-N group and a planar N atom (Fig. 18.4).
