Frequently, a menopause must be quickly induced, as in cancer of the ovary or in uterine hemorrhage. This is done by radiation or by the removal of the uterus. Severe vasomotor symptoms occur when the menopause is thus suddenly induced. Estrogens —among other drugs -are used in the amelioration of these symptoms.

A few elinieal trials have been undertaken looking at the use of laetic acid bacteria as adjunetive therapy in the treatment of various types of eaneer. The elinieal efficacy of heat-killed LC9018 (Lactobacillus) in eombination with radiation was evaluated in a randomized eontrolled trial on 61 patients with carcinoma of the uterine eervix of Stage IIB or 111 (Okawa et al., 1989). Supplementation with LC9018 enhaneed the therapeutic effect of irradiation and also protected the patients from leukopenia during radiotherapy. The combination therapy also prolonged survival and the relapse-free interval eompared with radiation alone.

Our approach to patients with abnormal placentation is to selectively embolize bilateral uterine and internal iliac arteries as soon as possible after delivery. Using the embolization technique, we obtained results similar to that of the prophylactic in controlling PPH, but without the risk of radiation to the fetus. 

Since uterine artery embolization is performed in relativelyyoung patients, some of whom are desiring future fertility, it is critical that radiation exposure... 

In conclusion, the success of uterine artery embolization for uterine fibroids is dependent on an understanding of the anatomy, and particularly an appreciation of the variant anatomy that can be the source of some unusual complications. There are a number of technical considerations that can influence the ease of the procedure, and the safety of the procedure. The operator should be well versed in the variety of catheters that can be used for this procedure, as well as the characteristics of the embolic materials. Attention needs to be paid to radiation safety there are a number of factors that the operator controls and which can markedly decrease the radiation exposure for both the patient and the operator.

The signal changes seen at MRI correlate with the overall radiation dose applied. Radiation-induced edema persists in the myometrium of the uterine corpus for up to 6 months after irradiation. After completion of radiation, there is a decrease in signal intensity on T2-weighted images, the endometrium becomes narrower, and the zonal anatomy of the myometrium is eliminated. In postmenopausal women, the uterus returns to its former MRI appearance without zonal anatomy after resolution of radiation-induced edema.
