Using Configuration Files

The configuration file commands Load from file... and Save to file... are called from the File I Experiment setup pull-down menu. As shown on the right hand side of Fig. 4.16, configuration file are simple ASCII text file containing the file names of the spin system, pulse program and, if required, experiment parameter lists such as a delay list etc. Additional experiment and processing parameters are saved in the later sections of the configuration file.

Because configuration files are text files, existing configuration files can be easily amended using either NMR-SIM or a simple text editor and the modified file stored under the same or a new filename. If a text editor is used the file must be stored as a plain ASCII text file.

Sherwin-Williams has developed such a polymer process control system. The methodology used to accommodate the contrasting requirements has two key elements. First, the software is based on a simple architecture that places the definition of changing reactor hardware elements and characteristics in easily modified configuration files (5). Second, the language uses a small number of basic commands to describe formulations and reactor control. Complex operations are described by reference to commands tables (macros) built using several basic commands or other macros. 

In this section we will show how to take a schematic and change it into a subcircuit so that you can use it with other circuits. In order to follow this section you must have access to the libraries and configuration files for Capture. If you are running Capture on a network, you may not have access to these files. If you are running this example on your own computer, you should be able to follow the example with no problems.

DOS uses two main configuration files, CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. Each file is a simple ASCII text file that contains commands and variables that set up the user environment in DOS. 

We then moved to troubleshooting software issues. Starting with DOS and moving to Windows, we discussed common configuration files and techniques that can be used to test their validity. 

Other than that, there are very few actual text-based applications in newer versions of Windows. For a bit of a taste of the old days, though, check out the EDIT program (See Figure 12.21), still provided free of charge with both Windows 98 and Windows 2000. EDIT is still often used to modify batch files and text configuration files. 

Opening a file Double-clicking a file in the right pane will open the program if it is an application if it is a file, it will open it using whichever file extension is configured for it. 

Let s discuss some Windows 9x configuration files and the tools used to edit them. 

There are a number of ways to modify the INI files on a Windows 9x machine. First, you can open up a copy of Notepad, or the text editor of your choice, and go to town. This is still probably the most common method of modifying INI configuration files. If you prefer to have things a bit easier, though, there are a couple of tools provided with Windows 9x for dealing with these files. Both Windows 95 and Windows 98 allow you to use a tool called SYSEDIT. EXE to modify certain files, and Windows 98 has added MSCONFIG. EXE as well. 

The two major types of configuration files are the INI files and the Registry. The INI files are still used in Windows 9x, but as previously mentioned, they have less responsibility. The Registry, on the other hand, is used almost exclusively for holding configuration settings. It holds them not only for applications, but also for the system itself. Additionally, it contains different settings for different users. 

Windows 3.x 16-bit applications setup routines look similar to the Windows 32-bit applications we looked at earlier except that they use INI and other configuration files and are generally completely ignorant of the Registry.

To install the Vienna RNA package, get the latest ViennaRNA-X.X. tar. gz file from www.tbi.univie.ac.al/RNA. The package can be installed in exactly the same way as RNAz, using. / configure and make. Please refer to the INSTALL document for detailed installation options. Make sure that the Perl programs in the Utils directory are in the PATH of executables. 

The BioMart data model is a simple modular schema composed of a central table, linked to its satellite tables by primary/foreign key relations. The schema can be normalized but typically includes denormalizations to achieve maximum query response optimizations. All the BioMart metadata is stored in XML configuration files on the database servers. The metadata files can be readily created and modified using MartEditor, a Java-based configuration editor. 

The configuration files used in the Check its can be used with the full version of NMR-SIM but the experimental data can only be processed using the full version of ID... 

After the software installation two new directories will have been created in the root directory of the local PC. Assuming that the default pathway was used in the installation the program directory C Teach. .. has the directory structure shown in Fig. 1.2. The second directory C NMRSIM SESSION created contains all the pulse programs, spin systems and experimental set-ups files in the subdirectories C . .. CONFIG configuration files, C . .. HAM spin system files, C . .. PP pulse program files, C . .. WAVE pulse shape files, C . .. LIST lists files and C . .. JOB job files. Table... 

The loading of a configuration file (cfg files) is done using the Load from file... command in the File pull-down menu. In the Check its this operation is described by the short hand notation File Experiment setup Load from file. A left-hand mouse button click on the command field opens a standard Windows file list box. In this file list box it is possible to select a specific cfg file either directly from the keyboard or by using the mouse it is also possible to change the directory and/or disk drive if necessary. 

Simulations are started using either the Run Experiment or Check Parameters Go commands in the Go pull-down menu. The Check Parameters Go command opens the Experiment parameter dialog box to enable the parameters to be checked before the simulation is started. By default the configuration file used in the Check its require the output filename must to be entered prior to the calculation starting (Fig. 1.9).
