Other Configurations

As MSRs are studied in the field of microprocess engineering, together with other devices, in which physical processes occur, some combinations can be found such as stack-like reactors with or integrating external heating and cross-fiow/counterflow heat exchangers/reactors, the last one being used mainly for evaporation purposes. 

The cylindrical geometry can be accommodated by a suitable definition of /J. Consider a cylindrical membrane of material A between radii r0 and n ending a hollow cylinder of material B between r and r2. Then

Meeting all A.S.M.E. Unfired Pressure Vessel Code requirements, the 80-10" Head permits significantly higher pressures than other configurations selected for the same service. The 80-10 " Head is named for its unique dimensions—the dish radius equals 80% of the head diameter and the inside corner radius equals 10% of the head diameter. These dimensions compare to 100% and 6% respectively for A.S.M.E. F D Heads. 

In order to construct an expression representing an arbitrary Boolean function J-, we must therefore j)erform two simple steps (1) construct expressions of the above form for each occurrence of a 1 in J- s truth table, and (2) join each such expression by the OR operator. Since each term is explicitly constructed so as to pick out a particular input configuration yielding the value 1 under J-, no more than one such term in the resulting OR expansion can yield the value 1 for a given input. All other configurations are identically zero. 

For example, let s look at the stereochemistry of SnI reactions. We already saw that Sn2 reactions proceed via inversion of configuration. But SnI reactions are very different. Recall that a carbocation is sp hybridized, so its geometry is trigonal planar. When the nucleophile attacks, there is no preference as to which side it can attack, and we get both possible configurations in equal amounts. Half of the molecules would have one configuration and the other half would have the other configuration. We learned before that this is called a racemic mixture. Notice that we can explain the stereochemical outcome of this reaction by understanding the nature of the carbocation intermediate that is formed.

Other configurations are commercially available. PVDF has a use range from -40 to 302°F (150°C). PVDF has a high tensile strength, flex modulus, and heat deflection temperature. It is easily welded, resists permeation, and offers a high-purity smooth polymer surface. This is the polymer of choice for high-purity applications such as semiconductor, bioprocessing, and pharmaceutical industries. 

Other configurations that are used include an concentric electrode setup in a tubular reactor, where the discharge still is capacitivily coupled. Also, inductive coupling has been used, with a coil surrounding the tubular reactor [146, 147].
