Used and abused

Fibers are linear strands held together by intermolecular forces such as hydrogen bonding between the polymer strands. These pol5miers are generally called textiles. They re used to make our clothes and our carpets. [Pg.260]

Elastomers, sometimes called rubber, are thermoplastic materials that become slightly crosslinked during their formation. Because of this, they stretch and bounce. Natural rubber (latex) is classified as an elastomer along with its synthetic counterparts. These types of poljmiers are used for things like latex gloves and rubber bands and b ls. [Pg.260]

One of the best ways of classifying synthetic polymers is by the chemical processes used to create them. These processes normally fall into one of two categories  [Pg.260]

Many of the common polymers you come into contact with every day are called addition polymers — pol)miers that are formed in a reaction eddied [Pg.260]

Polyethylene is the simplest of the addition polymers. It s also one of the most economically important. Ethane is heated at a high temperature in the presence of a metal catalyst, like palladium. Ethane loses two atoms of hydrogen (which make hydrogen gas) and forms a double bond  [Pg.261]

Sieving Methods and Classification Sieving is probably the most frequently used and abused method of analysis because the equipment, an ytical procedure, and basic concepts are deceptively simple. In sieving, the particles are presented to equal-size apertures that constitute a series of go-no-go gauges. Sieve analysis presents three major difficulties (1) with woven-wire sieves, the weaving process produces three-dimensional apertures with considerable tolerances, particularly for fine-woven mesh (2) the mesh is easily damaged in use (3) the particles must be efficiently presented to the sieve apertures. [Pg.1827]

The most important fluorinated benzodiazepine, flurazepam (21) has found considerable use (and abuse) as a hypnotic [I4 Flumazenil (22) is a fast-acting antidote in the treatment of benzodiazepine intoxication and m the reversal of the CNS effects of benzodiazepines dunng anesthesia [f<5,19]... [Pg.1122]

Prevalence of benzodiazepine use and abuse can be estimated by national and cross-national sutveys of the general population and of populations in medical clinics, psychiatric institutions, and chemical dependency tteatment units. [Pg.114]

How the different neurotransmitters may be involved in the initiation and maintenance of some brain disorders, such as Parkinson s disease, epilepsy, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety and dementia, as well as in the sensation of pain, is then evaluated and an attempt made to see how the drugs which are used in these conditions produce their effect by modifying appropriate neurotransmitter function (section C). The final section (D) deals with how neurotransmitters are involved in sleep and consciousness and in the social problems of drug use and abuse. [Pg.1]

The subtlety with which Dr. von Knieriem absolved himself of the Polish aggression by planning a more pleasant time for the French was all the more difficult because he was probably sincere. Farben itself had inspired the previous "New Orders" this time, in early 1940, Hitler took the initiative. Von Knieriem stayed in the background, while the others boldly used and abused his ideas. When they were through with their plan, it was a breathtaking expansion of what Hitler had asked for. [Pg.292]

Few terms have been more commonly used and abused in the scientific literature than nano. However, if one is able to sift through the vast amounts of nano literature, there are also numerous reports that are of both academic and commercial importance. This is particularly true for the field of catalysis in which rapid progress is being made that has transformed this once black art into a science, which is understood on a molecular and even atomic level. These gains have been particularly driven by the fields of surface and nanomolecular science with improvements in instrumentation and experimental techniques that have facilitated scientists observations on the nano-size scale. [Pg.537]
