Use as substrates

The early Escherunoser-Stork results indicated, that stereoselective cyclizations may be achieved, if monocyclic olefins with 1,5-polyene side chains are used as substrates in acid treatment. This assumption has now been justified by many syntheses of polycyclic systems. A typical example synthesis is given with the last reaction. The cyclization of a trideca-3,7-dien-11-ynyl cyclopentenol leads in 70% yield to a 17-acetyl A-norsteroid with correct stereochemistry at all ring junctions. Ozonolysis of ring A and aldol condensation gave dl-progesterone (M.B. Gravestock, 1978 see p. 279f.). [Pg.91]

Quaternary ammonium salts as we have seen are useful m synthetic organic chem istry as phase transfer catalysts In another more direct application quaternary ammo mum hydroxides are used as substrates m an elimination reaction to form alkenes... [Pg.938]

C. uti/is yeast is produced by either fed-batch or continuous processes. Aerated-agitated fermentors range up to 300 m total capacity and ate operated in the same manner as described for S. cerevisiae (2,5). C. utilis is capable of metabolizing both hexose and pentose sugars. Consequendy, papermiU wastes such as sulfite waste Hquot that contain these sugars often ate used as substrates. [Pg.466]

Polymers are only marginally important in main memories of semiconductor technology, except for polymeric resist films used for chip production. For optical mass memories, however, they are important or even indispensable, being used as substrate material (in WORM, EOD) or for both substrate material and the memory layer (in CD-ROM). Peripheral uses of polymers in the manufacturing process of optical storage media are, eg, as binder for dye-in-polymer layers or as surfacing layers, protective overcoatings, uv-resist films, photopolymerization lacquers for repHcation, etc. [Pg.138]

In the calendering method, a PVC compound which contains plasticizers (qv) (60—120 phr), pigments (qv) (0—10 phr), fillers (qv) (20—60 phr), stabilizers (10—30 phr), and other additives, is kneaded with calender roUs at 150—200°C, followed by extmsion between clearance-adjusted roUs for bonding onto the substrate. This method is employed for products with thick PVC layers, ie, of 0.05—0.75 mm thickness. The main plasticizer used is di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DOP). For filler to reduce cost, calcium carbonate is mainly used. A woven or knit fabric made of cotton, rayon, nylon, polyester, and their blend fiber is used as substrate. For foamed vinyl-coated fabrics, the bonded materials are heated in an oven to decompose the foam-blowing... [Pg.92]

The contact ends of printed circuit boards are copper. Alloys of nickel and iron are used as substrates in hermetic connectors in which glass (qv) is the dielectric material. Terminals are fabricated from brass or copper from nickel, for high temperature appHcations from aluminum, when aluminum conductors are used and from steel when high strength is required. Because steel has poor corrosion resistance, it is always plated using a protective metal, such as tin (see Tin and tin alloys). Other substrates can be unplated when high contact normal forces, usually more than 5 N, are available to mechanically dismpt insulating oxide films on the surfaces and thereby assure metaUic contact (see Corrosion and corrosion control). [Pg.30]

Dibromo-3-ketones may also be used as substrates for the preparation of A -3-ketones by Joly s method. " Hexamethylphosphoramide has been recommended as a medium suitable for the dehydrobromination of a-bromo ketones to give a, -unsaturated ketones in high yield without rearrange-... [Pg.293]

If A -20-keto steroids are used as substrates, only low yields of A -17a-hydroxy-20-keto compounds are obtained. If a methyl group is also present on the double bond at C-16, the final product is a 16-methylene-17a-hydroxy-20-keto steroid. " ... [Pg.198]

Theperfluoroorganozmc compounds have limited application in organic syn thesis because of their lack of reactivity However, heptafluoro I methylethylzinc iodide reacts with acyl fluorides or anhydrides of carboxylic acids in the presence of pyndine to give the corresponding ketones [7S] (equations 28 and 29) In the presence of zinc fluoride, acyl chlorides can be used as substrates [7d]... [Pg.676]

Under similar conditions, perfluoroalkyl iodides react with alkyl phosphates to give fluorinated phosphine oxides, phosphinates, and phosphines [54 (equation 49) The product formed depends upon the stoichiometry and type of iodide used. When sodium alkyl trithiocarbonates are used as substrates, perfluoroalkyl tri-thiocarbonates ate formed [55]. [Pg.681]

When perfluoroheptylcopper reacted with propargyl bromide, a violent reaction occurred, and less than 10% of the expected allene was obtained [226] However, when propargyl chlorides or tosylates were used as substrates, the expected allenes were obtained m good yields [227] (equation 156)... [Pg.707]

The order of alkyl halide reactivity in nucleophilic substitutions is the sane as their order in eliminations. Iodine has the weakest bond to carbon, and iodide is the best leaving group. Alkyl iodides are several times more reactive than alkyl bromides and from 50 to 100 times more reactive than alkyl chlorides. Fluorine has the strongest bond to carbon, and fluoride is the poorest leaving group. Alkyl fluorides are rarely used as substrates in nucleophilic substitution because they are several thousand times less reactive than alkyl chlorides. [Pg.330]

Quaternaiy ammonium salts, as we have seen, aie useful in synthetic organic chemistry as phase-transfer catalysts. In another, more direct application, quaternaiy ammonium hydroxides aie used as substrates in an elimination reaction to fonn alkenes. [Pg.938]

A vector for in vitro expression of DNA inserts as RNA transcripts can be constructed by putting a highly efficient promoter adjacent to a versatile cloning site. Figure 13.15 depicts such an expression vector. Linearized recombinant vector DNA is transcribed in vitro using SPG RNA polymerase. Large amounts of RNA product can be obtained in this manner if radioactive ribonucleotides are used as substrates, labeled RNA molecules useful as probes are made. [Pg.413]

Various heterocyclic compounds have been used as substrates for the Conrad-Limpach reaction. Amino-isoquinoline 52 was converted into 54 in 36% overall yield. ... [Pg.403]

In contrast, when the irradiation is performed on 2-cyanopyrrole, the isomeric products are observed. In fact, in this case, the corresponding Dewar pyrrole shows a lower energy than in the previous case, allowing the formation of the isomeric products (Fig. 6). When 2-methylpyrrole is used as substrate, the formation of the triplet state is favored, but this triplet state cannot evolve through the formation of the biradical intermediate. [Pg.55]

In the photochemical isomerization of isoxazoles, we have evidence for the presence of the azirine as the intermediate of this reaction. The azirine is stable and it is the actual first photoproduct of the reaction, as in the reaction of r-butylfuran derivatives. The fact that it is able to interconvert both photochemically and thermally into the oxazole could be an accident. In the case of 3,5-diphenylisoxazole, the cleavage of the O—N bond should be nearly concerted with N—C4 bond formation (8IBCJ1293) nevertheless, the formation of the biradical intermediate cannot be excluded. The results of calculations are in agreement with the formation of the azirine [9911(50)1115]. The excited singlet state can convert into a Dewar isomer or into the triplet state. The conversion into the triplet state is favored, allowing the formation of the biradical intermediate. The same results [99H(50)1115] were obtained using as substrate 3-phenyl-5-methylisoxazole (68ACR353) and... [Pg.59]

Platinised niobium and tantalum Niobium and tantalum can be used as substrate materials where environmental conditions dictate a higher driving voltage, e.g. brackish water. Use is limited due to relatively high cost. Copper cored materials are again available. [Pg.209]

These are major disadvantage of the esterase resolution process. Since die optimum pH of die enzymic reaction is generally on the alkaline side, die esters used as substrates are non-enzymatically hydrolysed and die optical purity of die L-amino adds obtained is generally low. Also the substrate has to be protected at the amino group in most cases in order to prevent formation of diketopiperasines. The esterase method is not attractive in practice and to the best of our knowledge is not used on an industrial scale. [Pg.286]

A single crystallisation is unlikely to lead to the isolation of pure crystals. In practice the product recovered in this process contains about 90% 11 a-hydroxyprogeterone with low levels of other products (especially 5 a-pregnane-3,20-dione and 60, lla-dihydroxyprogesterone). An example of a manufacturer who uses microbial 11a hydroxylation is Upjohn progesterone is used as substrate. [Pg.317]

Cyclical monoterpenes such as limonene have also been used as substrate for the production of valuable products. A good example is the conversion of limonene to a-terpineol by Cladosporium sp. Thus,... [Pg.322]

Optically active (R)- and (S)-aldchydcs, prepared from isopropylidene glyceraldchyde, were used as substrates. [Pg.49]

The synthesis of 4-alkyl-y-butyrolactones 13 and 5-alkyl-<5-valerolactones 14 can be achieved in high enantiomeric excess by alkylation of ethyl 4-oxobutanoate and ethyl 5-oxopentanoate (11, n = 2, 3). The addition of diethylzinc, as well as dimethylzinc, leads to hydroxy esters 12 in high optical purity. When methyl esters instead of ethyl esters are used as substrates, the enantioselectivity of the addition reaction is somewhat lower. Alkaline hydrolysis of the hydroxy esters 12, followed by spontaneous cyclization upon acidification, leads to the corresponding y-butyro- and -valerolactones32. [Pg.181]

An interesting approach to zr n.v-2,3-disubstituted cyeloalkanones is offered by auxiliary controlled intramolecular Michael additions. The diastereoselectivity depends on the chiral alcohol used193> l94. When the borneol derivative 7 was used as substrate, a single diastereomer of 8 resulted when the reaction was performed at 25 "C under thermodynamic control with a catalytic amount of sodium hydride in benzene. [Pg.974]

Saccharomyces cerevisiae is anaerobically grown in a continuous culture at 30°C. Glucose is used as substrate and ammonia as nitrogen source. A mixture of glycerol and ethanol is produced. At steady-state condition mass the flow rate is stated. The following reaction is proposed for the related bioprocess 4,6... [Pg.230]
