The book opens with an explanation of risk analysis and analytical methods used for detecting contaminants in food products. This is followed by full details of relevant EU and USA regulations. The second part of the book provides information about specific contaminants. 

To further complicate the situation, when developing country producers seek to sell into two or more different import markets with different regulatory requirements, they must comply with the most stringent aspects of each regulation, which may be in contradiction. Historically there have been distinct and fundamental differences between USA regulation and EU/UK requirements for GMP. As discussed previously, the US required all drugs to be made to GMP requirements and performed inspections throughout the world in support of these requirements. In the UK, only drug products and biological manufacturers (not APIs, except some specified antibiotics) were inspected by the regulatory authority for compliance to GMP. Other EU countries, such as France and Italy, did require audits of API manufacturers, but the requirements and standards varied widely throughout the EU. 

The treatment of effluent water contaminated with solvents is very well and comprehensively treated. The processing of solvents, whether contaminated with water or involatile residues, is less well covered. USA regulations as in place in 1987 are fully described. 

Some countries have adopted all or part of the USA regulations. Other countries and mainly the newcomers (countries desiring to become nuclear operator) adopt some IAEA requirements and safety guides as national regulatory documents. France and Japan, with established nuclear regulatory bodies, have their own regulations. A recent shift has been to adopt (and to respect) the general procedures recommended by the IAEA. 

The technical specification is a preferred way of dealing with the shutdown safety issues in the USA. The USA regulators determined that the technical specification requirements would be appropriate for assuring the safety in shutdown. Most of the European countries required utilities to perform a PSA study and identify possible improvements for shutdown operations. 

In the USA, regulation of OP veterinary medicines is broadly similar to that in the EU but a major difference is that veterinary ectoparasiticides are regulated by the USEPA under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) as amended, as pesticides. The Food and Drug Administration s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) regulates active ingredients that exert an effect by systemic absorption and distribution under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (1938) as amended.
