Weight, Thickness, and Density. The thickness differs according to appHcation. Vinyl-coated fabrics are very heavy and dense. Urethane-coated fabrics and man-made leather are very light and two-thirds to one-half leather in density. [Pg.92]

Water-Vapor Permeability. Water-vapor permeabiUty depends on the polymer used for the coating layer and its stmcture. Vinyl-coated fabrics have Httie water-vapor permeabiUty due to the coating layer. Although polyurethane polymer is water-vapor permeable, urethane-coated fabrics also have low permeabiUty values due to their soHd layer stmcture. On the other hand, man-made leathers have good permeabiUty values as high as that of leather due to their porous layer stmcture. The permeabiUty of grain-type is lower than that of suede-type, influenced by finishing method. [Pg.92]

Urethane-Coated Fabrics. Manufacturing methods for urethane-coated fabrics are the dry system and the wet system. [Pg.93]

The production of coated fabrics including vinyl- and urethane-coated in the early 1980s is shown in Table 3 (4). Only production in the Far East showed an increase. The increase of urethane-coated fabrics mainly supports this tendency (Table 4). [Pg.95]

Leather-like materials now important in the market are of three main classes (/) vinyl-coated fabrics, (2) urethane-coated (synthetic) fabrics, and (J) man-made leathers. To appreciate their leather-replacement capabiUties it is necessary to know the stmcture of natural leather. [Pg.88]

Inhalation and dermal exposure can occur during the manufacture and use of TDI. Workers and individuals in close proximity to the plant may inhale emissions from urethane foam production manufacturing facilities. It can be present as a unreacted impurity in materials, for example, TDI has been found in a urethane foam fabric coating in a concentration of <200 mgkg h... [Pg.1454]

An important application of urethane coatings is in the fabric coatings field. The terra "wet look" was very fashionable for some time and was applied to highly glossy urethane coatings and was later succeeded by the "suede look." These types of coatings were applied to apparel but were also employed in furniture fabrics. [Pg.987]

Urethane rubbers have found steadily increasing use for oil seals, shoe soles and heels, fork-lift truck tyres, diaphragms, chute linings and a variety of mechanical applications. Fabric coatings resistant to dry cleaning are a recent development. In many of these applications high elasticity is not an important prerequisite so that the polyurethane rubbers must be compared not only with other rubbers but also with a variety of thermoplastics. [Pg.788]

A mixture of ammonium chloride and borax was one of the treatments of cellulosic fabrics reported by Gay-Lussac in 1821. Due to its low dehydration temperature and water solubility, sodium borates are only used as flame retardants in cellulose insulation (ground-up newspaper— see Sections 9.2.1.2 and 9.2.2.1), wood timber, textiles, urethane foam, and coatings. For example, a mixture of urethane (100 parts), borax (100 phr), and perlite (30phr) was claimed to provide flame-retardant urethane foam.8 Borax in conjunction with boric oxide, silica, ammonium chloride, and APB as ceramizing additives and volume builders, are claimed in a fire-protection coating based on polybutadiene and silicone microemulsion.9 Using a modified DIN 4102 test, the chipboard with the coating showed a loss of mass less than 1% and there was no pyrolysis of the wood sample. [Pg.209]
