In 1969 Ghiorso, Nurmia, Harris, K.A.Y. Eskola, and P.E. Eskola of the University of California at Berkeley reported that they had positively identified two, and possibly three, isotopes of Element 104. The group indicated that, after repeated attempts, they produced isotope 260-104 reported by the Dubna groups in 1964. 

Gilbert Newton Lewis (1875-1946 was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, and received his Ph.D. at Harvard in 1899. After a short time as professor of chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1905-1912), he spent the rest of his career at the University of California at Berkeley (1912-1946). In addition to his work on structural theory, Lewis was the first to prepare heavy water," D20, in which the two hydrogens of water are the 2H isotope, ceuterium.

We obtained pieces of counted and dated Sequoia gigantea from Paul Zinke of the Forestry Department at the University of California at Berkeley, from Henry Michael of the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania and from the United States Forestry Service in Kings Canyon National Park. 

Susan completed her undergraduate work at the University of California at Berkeley, followed by training and work as a paralegal. Professor Bruce Ames, a biochemist at the University of California at Berkeley is one of the pioneers of this type of short-term testing. The Ames Test, as it is called, is now widely used, typically as one of several short-term tests that constitute a series of tests, or battery. A battery is thought necessary because no single test is adequate to detect all types of genotoxicity. The Ames Test involves the use of mutant strains of a common bacterium. Salmonella typhimurium, that back-mutate to their normal state in the presence of a mutagenic chemical or metabolite. Many other bacterial and mammalian cell systems have been made available for this type of testing. 

Then, in the mid 1970s, Professor Bruce Ames of the University of California at Berkeley came along. We discussed in Chapter 5 Professor Ames role in the development of tests for genetic toxicity, tests that tell us something about mechanisms of carcinogenicity. 

A project at the University of California at Berkeley (FEDRIP 1996) will study factors affecting the rates of degradation for several chlorinated hydrocarbons by soil microbial populations. Chloroform will be included as one of the organic chemicals studied. 

Albert Ghiorso and his team of chemists that included Glenn T. Seaborg, Stanley G. Thompson, Bernard G. Harvey, and Gregory R. Ghoppin bombarded atoms of einsteinium-253 with hehum ions in the cyclotron at the University of California at Berkeley. This resulted in a few atoms of mendelevium-256, which is one of the isotopes of mendelevium plus a free neutron.
