In 1969 Ghiorso, Nurmia, Harris, K.A.Y. Eskola, and P.E. Eskola of the University of California at Berkeley reported that they had positively identified two, and possibly three, isotopes of Element 104. The group indicated that, after repeated attempts, they produced isotope 260-104 reported by the Dubna groups in 1964. [Pg.158]

Gilbert Newton Lewis (1875-1946 was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, and received his Ph.D. at Harvard in 1899. After a short time as professor of chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1905-1912), he spent the rest of his career at the University of California at Berkeley (1912-1946). In addition to his work on structural theory, Lewis was the first to prepare heavy water," D20, in which the two hydrogens of water are the 2H isotope, ceuterium. [Pg.8]

Sketching on copies of the drawing may now start. If walls are to be put up, a thickness of 6 inches may be assumed, unless special circumstances are present. The preferable door width is 36 inches, but 30 inches may be acceptable under some local codes. Installation of large equipment, however, could require larger (double) doors, generally five feet wide. For safety reasons, a laboratory must have two exits. When a new laboratory building at the University of California at Berkeley was in the plan-... [Pg.19]

Dr. Spiller received his first doctorate in chemistry from the University of Milan (Italy), and later a Master s degree and a Ph.D. in nutrition from the University of California at Berkeley. He did additional studies at the Stanford University School of Medicine at Stanford, California. He is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition, a Certified Nutrition Specialist, and a member of many professional nutrition societies. [Pg.6]

Susan completed her undergraduate work at the University of California at Berkeley, followed by training and work as a paralegal. Later, in spite of serious chemical and electromagnetic field barriers, she earned a master s degree in disability policy. A divorce was one of the challenges she faced during that chapter of her life. [Pg.88]

The transition between the two centuries also saw the discovery and development of two concepts essential to the further development of the understanding of soil chemistry. One was the discovery by J. J. Thomson of the electron, a subatomic particle. This work occurred around 1897 and culminated in the determination of the electron charge-to-mass ratio, which made it possible to develop the idea of ions [21], This was basic to the concept of ions discussed and developed by Svante Arrhenius in a series of lectures given at the University of California at Berkeley in 1907 [22], In this series of lectures, he clearly describes ions of hydrogen and chlorine. The basic idea of a hydrogen ion and its application to enzyme chemistry would be further developed by S. Sorenson [13],... [Pg.26]

Professor Bruce Ames, a biochemist at the University of California at Berkeley is one of the pioneers of this type of short-term testing. The Ames Test, as it is called, is now widely used, typically as one of several short-term tests that constitute a series of tests, or battery. A battery is thought necessary because no single test is adequate to detect all types of genotoxicity. The Ames Test involves the use of mutant strains of a common bacterium. Salmonella typhimurium, that back-mutate to their normal state in the presence of a mutagenic chemical or metabolite. Many other bacterial and mammalian cell systems have been made available for this type of testing. [Pg.156]

Then, in the mid 1970s, Professor Bruce Ames of the University of California at Berkeley came along. We discussed in Chapter 5 Professor Ames role in the development of tests for genetic toxicity, tests that tell us something about mechanisms of carcinogenicity. [Pg.191]

A project at the University of California at Berkeley (FEDRIP 1996) will study factors affecting the rates of degradation for several chlorinated hydrocarbons by soil microbial populations. Chloroform will be included as one of the organic chemicals studied. [Pg.221]

Albert Ghiorso and his team of chemists that included Glenn T. Seaborg, Stanley G. Thompson, Bernard G. Harvey, and Gregory R. Ghoppin bombarded atoms of einsteinium-253 with hehum ions in the cyclotron at the University of California at Berkeley. This resulted in a few atoms of mendelevium-256, which is one of the isotopes of mendelevium plus a free neutron. [Pg.333]

Dr. Darleane C. Hoffman of the Nuclear Science Division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Department of Chemistry at the University of California at Berkeley has written and presented several papers documenting her work and that of her team on the laboratory production of transactinide and actinide elements one-atom-at-a-time. She explains the difficulty of determining the chemistry of heavy elements How long does an atom need to exist before it s possible to do any meaningful chemistry on it Is it possible to learn anything at all about the reactions of an element for which no more... [Pg.340]
