It is the overall goal of the Bremen Summer University for Women concept to allow room for theory and experimental action with the impetus towards feminist change in academic education of computer science and engineering. To reach, for example,... 

The summer universities for women offer the unique chance to conduct and explore these development processes and practices. For example when women computer scientists work in software development projects on self-defined applications. As lecturers and students, their interactions and results are integrated in teaching and learning contexts, some experiences spread out in other classes or workplaces. In the near future, it is one of our objectives to tap the full potential of this summer university aspect. 

However, practical experiences during 14 years of summer universities in Bremen showed that the opposite turned out to be the case. Although a lot of well-known companies attended at the career fair, only a few participants visited the fair or even got in contact with the human resources representatives in 2010, for example. In discussions with participants afterwards it seemed to be one faet that they didn t wanted to reveal themselves as participants of a summer university for women. Being part of an event especially created for women, something most participants never experienced at their home universities could be a symbol for being insufficient and fragile and to be in need of special assistance. As described above the asymmetric gender culture is anticipated.

Studies on isolation from adrenal cortex and the synthesis of cortisone (in 28 steps), an anti-arthritic hormone, was accomplished in the 1940s by Woodward and others. Cortisone was used as an important military medicine during World War II. Carl Djerassi from Stanford University directed the research at the Syntex Laboratories, which led to the synthesis of the first oral contraceptive pill for women. Koji Mori is very active in the field of the synthesis of pheromones. 

The presentation by Margaret W. Rossiter, of Cornell University, was titled 1970-2000 A Less Than Golden Age for Women in Chemistry The last 25 years have been a kind of golden age for women in science and engineering in the United States, compared with previous times. Laws were passed in 1972 that, pushed by well-publicized lawsuits, government investigations, voluntary pressure, and individual initiative, made substantial quantitative differences in the training and job opportunities...

Is it time, in other words, to convince Congress (or the Judiciary) that the loss of federal funds can be a Title IX action against U.S. chemistry departments and their universities for their entrenched inability to hire women ... 

Debra Rolison I think we often try to reassure ourselves that things are better for women in biology because the numbers are so much bigger. But two days after my editorial came out I heard from a plant physiologist Please come talk to us because we have the same problem. Clearly, critical mass has not solved the problem, and I agree it is broader than just chemistry and chemical engineering departments. I think we have to retrain universities as a whole to understand what their function is. 

But to our surprise, last year we learned that we were in fact dealing with a very widespread, if not universal, problem for women in science, and indeed in many other workplace settings, including law firms, the military, businesses, the arts, and so on. Not only that, we were definitely not the first people to figure this out ...
