In other words, Boerhaave warned against the danger of using mercury as a universal remedy. Every disease asks for its own remedy and as there are innumerable diseases it is an impossible task to present the physician with a textbook full of solutions. Again, we meet with Boerhaave s aim to make his pupils understand the causes of diseases and their cures, rather than delivering a recipe book. [Pg.207]

Commercial materials recommended for use as anti-foulants in processing industries contain combinations of dispersants, anti-oxidants, metal deactivators, and/or corrosion inhibitors. The choice of the best material for a given application should be determined by effectiveness and cost. Screening tests to differentiate between alternative materials will be described below. Because of the wide variety of streams requiring treatment, many commercial anti-foulants have been developed for different applications. The situation is similar to that of corrosion inhibition and no universal remedy is available. [Pg.216]

Do you believe then that uneasiness and the most mortifying sorrow are not concealed beneath the purple, or that a kingdom is a universal remedy against all miseries, a balm that assuages them, or an enchantment that annuls them Whereas, by the course of divine providence which knows... [Pg.296]

After some experience with MNDO, it became clear that there were certain systematic en ors. For example the repulsion between two atoms which are 2-3 A apart is too high. This has as a consequence that activation energies in general are too large. The source was traced to too repulsive an interaction in the core-core potential. To remedy this, the core-core function was modified by adding Gaussian functions, and the whole model was reparameterized. The result was called Austin Model 1 (AMl) in honour of Dewar s move to the University of Austin. The core-core repulsion of AMI has the form ... [Pg.87]

Keogh (1991) asked high performing first year university students what components they would need to hypothetically construct a lithium atom. One replied that they would need a nucleus, three electrons and an electron cloud. On further investigation, it turned out that this student perceived a need for the electron cloud as a place for the electrons to be put. Despite a remedial discussion, this student demonstrated the same conception several months later. [Pg.17]

St John s wort is a yellow flowering plant that was first used medicinally by the ancient Greeks as a diuretic and a treatment for wounds and menstrual disorders. This herbal remedy is widely prescribed in Germany, where it has been studied extensively in clinical trials as a treatment for depression. In most countries, including the UK, it is available over the counter. In Ireland it is available only by prescription. Recently, a team of German scientists led by Klaus Linde at the University of Munich published a comprehensive review of 29 clinical trials of St John s wort, involving more than 5,000 depressed patients. They concluded that it is more effective than placebos and as effective as standard antidepressants in the treatment of major depression. [Pg.168]

Each project has its own unique characteristic physical, environmental, cultural, and regulatory setting. No single approach (technology, process, or cleanup standard) can be universally applied. The following sections discuss the key elements that impact the economic decisions of remediation projects and result in the most efficient, cost-effective restoration. [Pg.331]
