In 1976 Unitika Ltd, Japan, first presented the potential flame retardant properties of polyamide 6 (PA6)/layered silicate nanocomposites. However, not until more recent studies did the serious evaluation of the flammability properties of these materials begin when Gilman et al. reported detailed investigations on flame retardant properties of PA6/layered silicate nanocomposite. From this pioneering work many attempts have been made to study the flammability properties of polymer/layered silicate nanocomposites. A wide range of polymers has been employed to provide either intercalated or exfoliated nanocomposites, which exhibit enhanced fire retardant properties. These include various thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers, such as polystyrene (PS), high impact polystyrene (HIPS), poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), polymethyl methacrilate (PMMA), " polypropylene 14,15,19-22 polyethylene is, 19,23-27 poly(ethylene-... [Pg.257]

In this and the following two sections we consider the data for a PLC and for different blends of that PLC with isotactic polypropylene (PP). The PLC used in this study was liquid crystalline copolyester PET/0.6PHB, where PET = poly (ethylene terephthalate), PHB = p-hydroxybenzoic acid and 0.6 is the mole fraction of PHB in the copolymer, manufactured by Unitika Ltd, Kyoto, Japan. The content of the PLC in the blends with PP was varied from 0 to 20 wt%. The samples were prepared by injection molding. PP, resin VB65 llB, was supplied by Neste OY, Finland. [Pg.408]

The nanocomposite concept appears to have its origin in pioneering research conducted in Japan by Unitika, Ltd. in the 1970s [1] and separatdy by Toyota Central Research and Development Laboratories in the late 1980s [2]. The theory was that if nanodays could be fully dispersed or exfohated to high aspect ratio platelets into polymers at relatively low levels (2-5 wt%), a number of mechanical and barrier properties would be enhanced. The original work at both Unitika and Toyota CRDL... [Pg.177]

Methods and Materials - Rodrun LC-3000 p(ET/HBA) TLCP, [Unitika. Ltd of Japan] in 40 60% molar ratio, is tested for compatibility with Polycarbonate. Recent studies have shown this TLCP to be more random in nature than a previous p(ET/HBA) TLCP [3,24]. The influence of the more random form of p(ET/HBA) copolymer on its compatibility with polycarbonate is here investigated. [Pg.72]
