It was pointed out before that studies on marine fish from India indicate that the proteins from them are about 93% digestible by man (Qureshi, 1951). The United States Fish and Wildlife Service has studied the nutritive value of the proteins extracted from the flesh of 17 species of fish. It was found that these marine proteins were equally effective in promoting growth in rats. As compared with proteins from beef round they were comparable in growth promoting effectiveness (Nilson, Martinek, and Jacobs, 1947). Earlier studies had indicated that the growth-promoting... [Pg.313]

The three populations of spotted owls in the United States— the Northern Spotted Owl, the California Spotted Owl, and the Mexican Spotted Owl—interbreed readily, and DNA analysis shows that they are genetically almost identical.1 In 1986 the Audubon Society estimated that 1,500 pairs was the minimum breeding population needed to avoid extinction, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) estimated that there were somewhere between 3,000 and 4,000 spotted owl pairs in the United States 2 the number was uncertain because spotted owls in much of California and the Southwest had never been counted. At the same time, it was apparent that the number of Northern Spotted Owls was declining because of reduction in habitat as timber was clear-cut. [Pg.86]

Much of the literature on fish and fish products is issued from governmental sources because considerable research in this field is carried on by such agencies. In the United States of America a principal literature source is the Division of Commercial Fisheries of the Fish and Wildlife Service of the Department of the Interior which puts out such publications as Commercial Fisheries Reviews, Research Reports, and Fishery Bulletins, In Canada many of such reports are published in the Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada which is the successor to the Journal of the Biological Board of Canada and Contributions to Canadian Biology and Fisheries,... [Pg.237]
