The caloric value of alitame is 1.4 cal/g. JECFA have assigned an ADI of 0.1 rng/kg bw. The Committee on Toxicology (COT) ADI is 0.3 rng/kg bw. Alitame is currently permitted for food use in China and Australia. Submissions for approval have been made to the FDA. In Europe, a submission will be made to the EU Commission and also temporary approval will be sought in the United Kingdom via the Food Standards Agency (Koivistoinen, 2003). [Pg.79]

In the United Kingdom, there is a distinct separation of food supplements and herbal medicines. The Food Standards Agency developed the Food Standard Act of 1999 and is responsible for protection of public health. The Food Supplement Directive 2002/46/EC, which harmonizes European Community legislation on food supplements, was published in 2002. This directive is stricter than existing UK standards and regulations but is relatively more liberal than what exists in other European countries. The directive defines the term food supplements, contains a list of vitamin and mineral sources that may be used in the manufacture of food supplements, states labeling requirements, and, in the future, will provide a framework for maximum and minimum levels for vitamins and minerals in food supplements. Herbals and botanicals are not discussed in this directive. [Pg.367]

The AMFC Directive requires that food control laboratories should be accredited to the EN 45000 series of standards as supplemented by some of the OECD GLP principles. In the UK, government departments have nominated the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) to carry out the accreditation of official food control laboratories for all the aspects prescribed in the Directive. However, as the accreditation agency will also be required to comply with the EN 45003 Standard and to carry out assessments in accordance with the EN 45002 Standard, all accreditation agencies that are members of the European Cooperation for Accreditation of Laboratories (EA) may be asked to carry out the accreditation of a food control laboratory within the UK. Similar procedures will be followed in the other Member States, all having or developing equivalent organisations to UKAS. Details of the UK requirements for food control laboratories are described later in this chapter. [Pg.81]

In order to quantify vitamin A values for humans within the metric system, therefore, international agencies have now introduced the biological equivalent of 1 microgram (1 meg) of retinol as the standard. In 1967, the FAO/WHO proposed that vitamin A allowances be expressed as the equivalent weight of retinol, and that the use of lU be discontinued. The United Kingdom adopted this change and coined the term Retinol Equivalent (RE). The U.S. Food and Nutrition Board (National Academy of Science, National Research Council) and Canada followed suit. The RE system of measurement takes into account the amount of absorption of the carotenes as well as the degree of conversion to vitamin A hence, it is more precise than the lU system. [Pg.1077]
