In this chapter we will familiarize ourselves with basic concepts in molecular symmetry [17]. The presence or absence of symmetry has consequences on the appearance of spectra, the relative reactivity of groups, and many other aspects of chemistry, including the way we will make use of orbitals and their interactions. We will see that the orbitals that make up the primary description of the electronic structure of molecules or groups within a molecule have a definite relationship to the three-dimensional structure of the molecule as defined by the positions of the nuclei. The orientations of the nuclear framework will determine the orientations of the orbitals. The relationships between structural units (groups) of a molecule to each other can often be classified in terms of the symmetry that the molecule as a whole possesses. As indicated elsewhere, there is evidence for a possible correlate of a pleasant sensation in a cat unit group, but this system has been little investigated in either the cat or in other species. Although the goat has a system that responds maximally to Na and Li salts, this system has not been seen in the carnivore. The chemical stimuli eliciting the human sensation of salty are salts in relatively high concentration, concentrations that in other species may stimulate more than one group.

Present in the rat petrosal ganglion was another set of acid units responsive primarily to certain carboxylic acids. Unlike the cat (7), the rat was unresponsive to some carboxylic acids even though they were in low pH solutions (2). Possibly the same is true for the rat GG acid units which were not investigated in as much detail. PG acid units, unlike all other acid unit groups, responded in a "grouping" discharge fashion. 

Two substituted carbon atoms, connected by a double bond, normally form a planar unit. Groups lying on the same side of the double bond are described as cis and those on opposite sides of the double bond as trans (Figure 12.4). The best plane through such a group of atorns can readily be calculated, by use of least-squares methods, as described in Figure 12.5 (compare with Figure 10.2, Chapter 10). 

After the REE patterns have been established, it is possible to check the reliability of the soil unit designations. The results in Table IV suggest that there is quite reasonable agreement between the REE patterns and the soil horizon units. Only 2 samples out of 42 do not appear to fit the various clusters. These two samples were obtained from an exposure where the basal stratigraphic sequence was undecipherable. This table confirms the similarity of Units II, Ill(lower), IV, and the basal unit (Group B) noted in Table III, and the similarity of Units I and Ill(upper) (Group A) with IT.

In order to create the supemet of this process involving all processing units of the three mentioned options, the basic parts of routes are included in the main structure of the supemet. Moreover some groups of one or more units have been created and modelled as subnets. As a result, the following unit groupings/subnets have been considered ... 

First of all, the plant flowsheet is split into units / group of units. The splitting it is done in units to which local control is applied the reactor (plus the heat exehangers around it), the distillation columns, mixing vessels, pumps. Since the mixers and the pumps are considered instantaneous (no dynamics) they are not interesting for the model reduction. Further, the units are individually reduced.

The readiness with which long-chain polymers crystallize is governed by the structure of the monomer and the linearity of the main chain. In the case of cellulose this relationship is referred to in the next chapter. Linear main chains are produced by the condensation or polymerization of bifunctional monomers which are those in which the uniting groups are such that the molecules can only link up end to end.
