One of the last developed version of this system (Neotrend) was developed to monitor blood gases continuously and directly in critically-ill premature babies. The system is equipped with a tiny optical fibre catheter (0.5 mm in diameter) which is inserted into the infant s descending aorta by means of an umbelical artery catheter. A sketch of the probe is shown in Figure 4. [Pg.421]

Panax ginseng is a perennial plant, growing 30-80 cm high. It has a round stem and bears terminal whorls of 5-8 palmate leaves (Gruenwald et al. 1998). The flowers have greenish-yellow corollas and grow in 1-3 umbels of 15-30 flowers. The fruit are red, pea-sized, and round. The rhizome is fusiform and is the principal part for medicinal interest. [Pg.180]

This is a diverse group of crops with a range of flavors. The family likeness appears when they flower—tiny individual flowers are produced in creamy white, umbrella-shaped flowerheads, known as umbels, very like those of their relations cow parsley and bronze fennel. They are very attractive to beneficial insects. [Pg.252]

It has been suggested that metabolites resulting from detoxification of plant compounds such as ferulic acid, a detoxification by-product of coniferyl benzoate and analogous compounds, may interfere with reproduction. However, experiments have shown that coniferyl benzoate in the diet of Japanese quail [Coturnix coturnix) had no hormonal effects. Rather, costs of detoxication and reduced nutrient utilization deter wild birds such as ruffed grouse, Bonasa umbel-lus, from feeding (Jakubas etal, 1993). [Pg.287]

Paper chromatography was used to estimate individual phenolics in lemon juice by Vandercook and Stephenson (119). After enzymatic hydrolysis of the juice, they found for eriodictyol, hesperitin, quercetin, phloroglucinol and umbel iferone average values of 20, 1.4, 2.2, 2.0 and 0.2 mg aglycone/100 ml, respectively. [Pg.409]
