Through the years, improved paints have been developed because of competition from environmental and consumer activists. The objective of improving overall quality and reducing emissions of VOCs has led to a wider selection of paint types. The user, therefore, must select a coating type that meets the cost of required application, equipment, energy costs for using, pollution and waste collection expenses, and application and cured performance requirements of the coating. 

However, there are some factors that may adversely affect the future of OEC in incineration. One is the general uncertainty of incineration itself. It continues to be difficult to obtain permits for new facilities and modifications for existing permits. Some of the environmental activist groups continue to question the use of incineration. Public perception will continue to be an important factor in incineration. The current shortage of 02 in the U.S. may limit the expansion of OEC in incineration until new capacity can be constructed. In some incineration applications, Oz requirements may be transient. If 02 is in short supply, 02 costs may be higher for that type of application because of the preference for applications with a constant ongoing 02 requirement. 

Overall opponents articulate three major types of arguments. These are environmental, economic and religious arguments. The first two types are mostly voiced by actors in what can be called the secular civil society. These are NGOs, independent academic research institutes and economists. Views in the third argument are articulated by Hindu activists and also by the leading opposition party in the national government, the Bharatiya Janata Party.
