The use of other plastics tends to be related to specialised needs and whether their advantages justify the additional cost, e.g. Aclar (trade name) may cost twenty times more than PET but is the nearest approach to an inert plastic and is approximately ten times less permeable than Saran (PVdC—polyvinylidene chloride) which is widely used as a film coating. Another popular mode for transmission experiments involves a thin-layer system (9, 10, 13, 18) like that shown in Figure 17.1.2. Holm (1967) identifies the contact resistance between particles of clean metal to be the result of current constriction at the point of contact. This geometric constriction together with the volume and surface resistivities integrated over the remaining volume and surface of a particle constitute the total resistance measured between two contacts located at the poles of the particle.
