Ethlyn Gibbs, director of the non-profit Turks and Caicos National Trust, which is charged with protecting the historic and natural heritage of the islands, says her group has struggled to stay abreast of such accelerating developments. 

Barefoot Factor Turks and Caicos beaches are all powdered with white, finely crushed coral and calcium carbonate. Some I 96 square miles of reef encircle the islands I 93 square miles of land, safeguarding the beaches from waves and surges, and replenishing them with fresh clean sand. 

Just northeast of Provo lies 800-acre Pine Cay, a private island with the most exquisite beach in all the Turks and Caicos. The mile-long stretch along its northwestern shore combines perfectly textured bone-white sand and iridescent turquoise surf. A low-key hotel and a few low-lying houses back the beach, which rarely holds more than a half-dozen people. 

Parrot Cay s mile-long beach is the second-most beautiful in the Turks and Caicos. But, unlike Pine Cay, this private 1,000-acre island doesn t go in for understatement. Guests at the Parrot Cay resort can rent tiki huts off the beach for 100 per day, where waiters will serve them private lunches. Or they can rent three-bedroom villas on a private beach, with butlers and pools. It s a 35-minute boat ride to Parrot Cay from Provo s Leeward Marina. 

It s a five-minute boat ride to North Caicos from Parrot Cay, or a 12-minute flight from Provo. The most fertile of the Turks and Caicos, this 41-square-mile island grows papayas, bananas, tomatoes and watermelons, among dozens of crops. North Caicos 1,500 residents are outnumbered by roseate flamingos. 

I Big Sand Cay Seven miles south of Salt Cay, this island offers one of Turks and Caicos finest beaches. Loll on the sand, and then explore the lighthouse ruins and, at your own discretion, two abandoned bunkers stamped "Keep Out. U.S. Government Property." Trips leave from Salt Cay.
