Tunney s Pasture in Ottawa in 1973, in which oxidant concentrations approached 0.14 ppm. This episode took place on a July weekend, and the nitrogen dioxide and NOx concentrations appear to be very small. Nonmethane hydrocarbons, however, were relatively high, about 0.6 ppm. [Pg.138]

The new building took longer to finish than a normal structure because of the special features that had to be incorporated to accommodate all these activities. The handling of radioactive materials required more customized installations than did any other function, especially because significant improvements in safety standards were incorporated. The radioactive materials processing faciUties at Tunney s Pasture would segregate distina functions much more rigorously than thqr had ever been at Port Hope or Chalk River. Irradiation equipment won acceptance much more easily in medical circles, where CPD already sold most of its products. In the early 1950s, people in the nuclear field were excited about the possibilities of their technology and preoccupied with the notion that almost anything could be improved through irradiation. Irradiation experiments had to be conducted within shielded containers to prevent radiation leakage. Sometimes the researchers at Tunney s Pasture used a beam therapy-unit head loaded with a cobalt-60 source at other times they used the cases designed to transfer cobalt-60 sources. As they adapted these pieces of equipment for experiments, it occurred to them that there would probably be a market for a device constructed specifically for the purpose. Best of all, equipment of this sort would provide another outlet for CPD s cobaIt-60. Discussions with possible customers at universities, research laboratories, and hospitals confirmed that they could use such a device either to experiment with irradiations or to irradiate small amounts of material on a routine basis. [Pg.134]

Marty McGuire tends to a Slowpoke reactor in the pool facility at Tunney s Pasture in May 1971. Most of these small reactors were sold to universities where they were used far research and teaching purposes. [Pg.202]
