Examples of true template effects nevertheless exist and can be found, for instance, in the preparation of fault-free gmelinite and mordenite zeolites [33] by the use of quaternary alkylammonium polymers prepared by reacting l,4-diazobicyclo[2.2.2]octane (Dabco) with Br(CH2)/iBr (n = 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10), hereinafter referred to as Di -n. 

Structures have been determined for [Fe(gmi)3](BF4)2 (gmi = MeN=CHCF[=NMe), the iron(II) tris-diazabutadiene-cage complex of (79) generated from cyclohexanedione rather than from biacetyl, and [Fe(apmi)3][Fe(CN)5(N0)] 4F[20, where apmi is the Schiff base from 2-acetylpyridine and methylamine. Rate constants for mer fac isomerization of [Fe(apmi)3] " were estimated indirectly from base hydrolysis kinetics, studied for this and other Schiff base complexes in methanol-water mixtures. The attenuation by the —CH2— spacer of substituent effects on rate constants for base hydrolysis of complexes [Fe(sb)3] has been assessed for pairs of Schiff base complexes derived from substituted benzylamines and their aniline analogues. It is generally believed that iron(II) Schiff base complexes are formed by a template mechanism on the Fe " ", but isolation of a precursor in which two molecules of Schiff base and one molecule of 2-acetylpyridine are coordinated to Fe + suggests that Schiff base formation in the presence of this ion probably occurs by attack of the amine at coordinated, and thereby activated, ketone rather than by a true template reaction. ... 

The preparation of even relatively simple catenanes and rotaxanes was a formidable synthetic challenge in the 1960s, which was when the first syntheses of rotaxanes were published.2,3 However, this is no longer true at the dawn of the twentyfirst century, thanks to the introduction of template effects in newer preparative approaches. 

Some believe that there are two main template effects kinetic and thermodynamic [8]. The latter is responsible for an increase in the yield of the complex with ligands formed in situ in the presence of metal ions, which bind products that result from ordinary reactions and to withdraw them from the reaction medium. These procedures are not true template reactions since they do not satisfy the above-mentioned conditions, and the metal ion causes equilibrium shift only. It is impossible to distinguish between kinetic and thermodynamic contributions to the template effect, since the coordination to the metal ion simultaneously causes both steric... 

All these ohservations lead to the conclusion that it is very difficult to judge whether the examined case is template polymerization or not on the basis of kinetic effects alone. It is especially true if the form of kinetic equation (exponents n and m) is different for template and blank polymerization since more complicated mechanism of reaction can he expected.
