Although less work has been done on the acoustic reduction of Tj in solids than in liquids, it has been established that, as for liquids, the natural values of Tj in solids can be reduced by the application of ultrasound. By coupling 20 kHz ultrasound to a sample of trisodium phosphate dodecahydrate in an open mesh nylon sack immersed in a liquid, the normal value of the Tj was reduced from 7.1 s (obtained from MAS NMR measurements) to 2.1 s. Subsequently, similar reductions (by a factor of about two) have been observed for the values of for in diamonds to which high frequency piezoelectric transducers were bonded directly.

Trisodium phosphate is strongly alkaline many of its appHcations depend on this property. For example, many heavy-duty cleaning compositions contain trisodium phosphate as a primary alkalinity source. The crystalline dodecahydrate itself is marketed as a cleaning compound and paint remover. Traditionally, trisodium phosphate has been used in water softening to remove polyvalent metal ions by precipitation as insoluble phosphates. Because the hypochlorite complex of trisodium phosphate provides solutions that are strongly alkaline and contain active chlorine, it is used in disinfectant cleaners, scouring powders, and automatic dishwashing formulations. 

The solid phase is the dodecahydrate—see Fig. 86,—0. Apfel said the solid phase between 0° and 30° is the dodecahydrate between 30° and 50°, the decahydrate and between 50° and 75°, probably the octohydrate. T. Graham gave 19 6 at 15 5°, and H. Schiff 10 5 at 15°. C. Darracq says tripotassium phosphate is sparingly soluble in cold water, but readily soluble in hot water. E. von Berg s tetrahydrated trirubidium phosphate is very hygroscopic and very soluble in water, likewise the pentahydrated tricaesium phosphate. H. Arctowsky found anhydrous trisodium phosphate to be insoluble in carbon disulphide.
