Tris-nonylphenyl phosphite TNPP

Brandt [200] has extracted tri(nonylphenyl) phosphite (TNPP) from a styrene-butadiene polymer using iso-octane. Brown [211] has reported US extraction of acrylic acid monomer from polyacrylates. Ultrasonication was also shown to be a fast and efficient extraction method for organophosphate ester flame retardants and plasticisers [212]. Greenpeace [213] has recently reported the concentration of phthalate esters in 72 toys (mostly made in China) using shaking and sonication extraction methods. Extraction and analytical procedures were carefully quality controlled. QC procedures and acceptance criteria were based on USEPA method 606 for the analysis of phthalates in water samples [214]. Extraction efficiency was tested by spiking blank matrix and by standard addition to phthalate-containing samples. For removal of fatty acids from the surface of EVA pellets a lmin ultrasonic bath treatment in isopropanol is sufficient [215]. It has been noticed that the experimental ultrasonic extraction conditions are often ill defined and do not allow independent verification. 

A mixture of monomers and TDM is added with mixing to the polybutadiene substrate for 5 hrs in the presence of the initiator system and the emulsifier. After polymerization, latexes were stabilized by adding 2,6-di-ter -butyl-p-cresol (DBPC) or tri(nonylphenyl) phosphite (TNPP) as antioxidants. They were then coagulated with a calcium chloride solution and finally dried at 50°C for 15 hrs.

Recent developments include systems with better colour fidelity and handling properties. Dover s Doverphos HiPure 4 and 4-HR are high-purity tris-nonylphenyl phosphite (TNPP) processing and heat stabilizers, claimed to reduce overall costs. With 0.1% residual nonyl phenol, they are FDA-approved for food-contact applications and also used in medicals, colour-critical polyolefins, and styrenic block copolymers. They are effective also in acrylics, elastomers, nylon, polycarbonate, polyurethanes, polystyrene. PVC. ABS, and PET. 

Sterically hindered phenols, such as 2,6 di-tert-butyl-p-cresol (BHT), long chain 3-(3,5 di-tert-hutyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-propionate or sebacate are the preferred substances for the stabilization of polystyrenes. Preferred thio compounds are long-chain thiodi-propionates. The combination of thio compounds with sterically hindered phenols leads to thioether substituted phenols. Suitable phosphorous compounds include substituted phenylphosphites, such as tris-nonylphenyl phosphite (TNPP) or phos-phonite. 

One likely source of nonylphenol is the use of tris(nonylphenyl)phosphite (TNPP) as a stabilizer and antioxidant in food contact plastics. 

Organophosphites provide color stability, but have a hygroscopic tendency. Hydrolysis of phosphites can ultimately lead to the formation of phosphoric acid, which can corrode processing equipment. Tris-nonylphenyl phosphite (TNPP) is the most commonly used organophosphite followed by tris (2,4,-di-tert-butylphenyl)phosphite. Thioesters have high heat stability, but have an inherent odor, which can be transferred to the host polymer. 

The most popular phosphite stabilizer is tris(nonylphenyl) phosphite (TNPP). The introduction of TNPP revolutionized the area of nondiscoloring rubber stabilization. 

Esterification. Alkylphenols react with acid chlorides and acids to produce commercially important esters. Three equivalents of -nonylphenol (10) react with phosphoms trichloride or tributyl phosphite to produce tris(4-nonylphenyl) phosphite (TNPP) (11).

Tris(nonylphenyl)phosphate (TNPP) is a common commercial phosphite. Note that this is not n-nonyl, hut rather a mixture of branched C9 isomers. Nonylphenol is commercially synthesized through Friedel-Crafts alkylation of phenol with nonene. Technical nonene ( propylene trimer ) is a mixture of predominantly C9-olefins with varying degrees of branching. The resulting nonylphenol is mainly a mixture of 4-substituted monoalkylphenols with various isomeric, branched nonyl groups [13]. Tris(2,4-di-t-butylphenyl)phosphite is another commonly used phosphite.

Phosphorus acid esters are very well-known antioxidants, mainly for polyolefins, but as mentioned previously, they also find application as PVC stabilizers (see Section 10.2.2). Good examples are tri(nonylphenyl) phosphite (Santowhite TNPP).
