Triethyltin bromide

Helium MIP-MS is also a very sensitive detection system for organotin compounds, such as tetraethyltin (TET), tetrabutyltin (TBT), triethyltin bromide (TET-Br), tripropyltin chloride (TPT-C1), tributyltin chloride (TBT-C1), and others, separated by CGC [213]. Detection limits at sub-pg levels were achieved, and linear dynamic ranges of at least three orders of magnitude were obtained.

Similar signs of toxicity were observed in male rats exposed to 4.2 mg/kg/day triethyltin bromide for 3 weeks (Richman and Bierkamper 1984). The rats developed hindlimb weakness in week 1 followed by paresis and paralysis by week 3. There was apparent recovery at the end of week 3. The primary histopathological findings were demyelination in the spinal cord, degeneration of axons of the sciatic nerve, and atrophy of fibers of the soleus muscle. This study demonstrated that both nerve and muscular components are involved in producing peripheral motor dysfunction. 

In another drinking water study, both single and repeated doses of triethyltin bromide produced performance decrements in a series of behavioral toxicity tests in rats (Reiter et al. 1980). The effects were rapid in onset but reversible 1 month after exposure was discontinued. Such findings correlate well with the effects on the myelin sheath (i.e., demyelination). These changes also illustrate the characteristic effects of the triethyltins as compared to trimethyltins. The authors estimated that a behavioral threshold for the rat is between 8-10 mg/kg/day triethyltin bromide for a 3-week exposure.

Tri-n-butyltin bromide (TBT), triethyltin bromide (TET), and trimethyltin chloride (TMT) inhibited the cardiac SR Ca uptake (Figure 4.1.2) and Ca +-ATPase (Figure 4.1.3) in vitro in rat heart in a concentration-dependent manner. The order of potency for Ca +-ATPase as determined by IC50, is TBT (2 pM) > TET (63 pM) > TMT (280 pM). For Ca uptake, it followed the same order, i.e., TBT (0.35 pM) > TET (10 pM) > TMT (440 pM). In agreement with them vifro results, both cardiac SR Ca +-ATPase and Ca uptake were significantly inhibited in vivo in rats treated with these organotin compounds... 

In the presence of isopropyl bromide, aluminum chloride reacts with hexaethylditin to produce triethyltin bromide in addition to tetraethyltin (283). Boron triduoride, dimethylboron Ruoride, and diborane have also been shown to bring about the cleavage of hexamethylditin to form tetra-methyltin (284).

Figure 3.4 shows a typical MLC-ICP-MS chromatogram. A 0.1 M SDS micellar mobile phase was used with a C g column for the separation of trimethyltin chloride (TMT-Cl), triethyltin bromide (TET-Br), and tripropyltin chloride (TPrT-Cl). Additionally, monomethyltin trichloride (MMT-Cl), dimethyltin dichloride (DMT-Cl), and trimethyltin chloride (TMT-Cl) were separated using a 0.02 M SDS mobile phase. The flow rate was 1 ml min for both separations.
