The macroinvertebrate community showed a high diversity at the headwaters of the main channel and tributaries of the Ebro River. This relevance is related with higher water quality [39] and suitable habitat characteristics in these sites. Biodiversity and density of macroinvertebrates decrease in the regulated areas of the river [40]. Nevertheless, the biological quality based on macroinvertebrates has improved during the last decade in the mid and low reaches of the tributaries, except for the Jalon river [41].

Triana, with a population of 600, is located at the confluence of Indian Creek and the Tennessee River. From 1947 until 1971 DDT was manufactured in a plant 10 kilometers from Triana. Several thousand tons of DDT industrial waste accumulated in the sediments of a tributary of Indian Creek. Locally caught fish have had total DDT residual levels up to 100 times the tolerance of 5 parts per million (ppm) set by the Food and Drug Administration. The high levels of DDT residues in the 12 persons surveyed were suspected of resulting from their consuming fish which had accumulated DDT from sediments. The task at hand was to measure residents exposure to DDT and relate it, if possible, to health effects in the population—an example of a cross-sectional study. 

The largest proportion of the total Fe was removed by ammonium oxalate, which attacks the amorphic fraction of iron oxide in the sediments (23). Among the low pH extractants, hydroxylamine was the least efficient in extracting Fe. The difference between the extraction of Fe by acid and extraction by hydroxylamine was related to the crystallinity of the hydrous iron oxide. As pure iron oxides aged (and crystallized) in the laboratory, Fe solubility in hydroxylamine declined relative to solubility in acetic acid (Table III). In San Francisco Bay sediments, the ratio of hydroxylamine-soluble Fe to acetic acid-soluble Fe increased during the period of maximum runoff to the estuary (27) suggesting the proportion of the Fe in the sediments that was freshly precipitated varied seasonally. This was expected, since periods of heavy runoff are also times of maximum Fe movement from the watershed to the tributaries of the estuary ( ). 

The distributions of G, N, and P in the mainstem, tributaries, and varzea are related to the white-, black-, and clearwater types. The high concentrations of alkalinity in the mainstem indicate that much of this white water originated in the Andes where fresh, mineral-rich rock is being weathered. This Andean contribution to the mainstem also is seen in the higher fractions of G, N, and P...

A last application of the previous reference (Thomas et al., 2005) was the study of pollution sources of lake Brome (Southern Quebec) from its tributaries, giving useful information related to agricultural pressure (manure spreading), wastewater management (urban runoff discharges) or golf management (use of fertilizers and pesticides). 

The spectra of the lake must be related to the ones of its main tributaries (Figure 2.4.12). Only one tributary brings almost 90% of water to the lake, but to upstream main rivers (tributaries 4 and 6) are contributing to the main tributary. The... 

The Danube river is the main receiving water for the entire Romanian hydrological basin, and its water quality is related with the water quality of its tributaries. The results show greater levels of pesticides at Tumu Magurele and Tulcea, due to the ccxitribution of the Olt and Prut rivers.
